My husband has had 6 rectal abcesses removed in the hospital/ doctor's office. Some so deep that he has had to have overnight hospital stays on antibiotics. I'm starting to wonder if he is being mis-diagnosed. We now have thousands of dollars in mediacal bills plus all the missed work pay. He now has another one on his buttocks almost the size half a golf ball. Is there anyone out there that has experienced this? He was told at one time from a culture that is was MRSA. The medication was $1,300.00 to fill. There has to be a cure for this. Anybody else know what this could be and how to stop it from continuing to happen?

  • It's possible that he has a horseshoe fistula where the main trunk hasn't been addressed surgically -- so the abscesses keep "budding" or erupting because they keep branching off. It's possible once the main part of the fistula is addressed, the others will resolve Check with the colorectal department of the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. In particular, let me recommend Dr. Ian C. Lavery. These are nasty situations -- and need prompt, appropriate attention. Try to reach Dr. Lavery's nurse -- and explain your situation. Don't scrimp on this one. Get to the best you can find -- as quickly as you can!

  • Just out of curiosity, what is "MRSA"? Why was the medication so expensive? What was it?

  • MRSA stands for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus - wow, what a mouthful! It is an antibiotic-resistant infection which may get into wounds in general.

  • Thank you to tomconner... I researched horseshoe fistulas..and it sounds like my husbands issue. It makes sense.. the "core" of the problem hasn't been treated, in return these abcesses keep returning! Thanks for the advice!
