  • I too am seeking answers. I go to bed fine and I wake up with hives and swelling of the lips. I have hypothyroidism but that dosn't seem to be the problem. But it could be, being that you can get swelling and hives if it gets to severe. I have gone to an allergy specialist and he has told me it is not allergies. I'm wondering if you have a thyroid problem as well? If you do, that may shed some light.

  • I suggest that you begin keeping a journal of things you are exposed to each day. Also, if you have pets, don't forget to consider that as a possibility. Latex is present in most mattresses and some pillows, etc.... Pinpointing an allergen can be a difficult and very frustrating task! Food journals can also be very helpful, if a food allergy is the culprit. Don't forget to include every ingredient, of every item, and monitor for ingredients that coincide with each flare up of the hives and/or swelling. I have found that cutting the labels off the actual food and pasting them into a notebook is easier, and allows for less error. Use a highlighter to look for common items. Laundry detergent, personal hygiene products and even mediciations are all items you do not want to forget to record. Predinsone can mask many allergic symptoms. But, you certainly do not want to go off it without discussing this with your doctor. Predinsone can be danger to stop cold turkey, so don't try this without medical guidance. Good luck!Diane

  • I just read the problems others are having. I will have to take Levothyroxine the rest of my life. I had an overactive thyroid & underwent radiation treatment. I need the Levothyroxine due to now my thyroid no longer exists. I am now 48 yrs old & once a month, during my menstrual cycle, I start breaking out in hives & my lips (either upper or lower) swells to an enormous size. I cannot attribute to what is causing this, either my thyroid treatment or pre-menopause. Please tell me I am not the only one going through this. Today at work, I kept having panic attacks & then 1 hour before I was to go home, my upper lip started swelling. I am so embarassed. I know I need to go to a Doctor, but the ones I have been to so far are totally useless. Any suggestions?

When that cleared up, a few days later, I awoke in the morning with swelling of the lips, tongue and face as well as a mouth full of canker sores again. I was convinced it was a food allergy, as I had both tomatoes and strawberries just before each outbreak, but I went and had allergy testing done today, and the Dr. told me I am not allergic to any food. He thinks I had a virus that my body reacted to and I may yet have another bout before it is over. This sounds fishy to me. I also have hypothyroidism and GERD and am on a drug for HBP, but I have been on these for years with no problem. Any ideas? I hope I don't have another bout of this, because it was scary and I lost weight because I couldn't eat much or even brush my teeth because of the pain of the canker sores.

I start with a random coldsore then I feel like I have a chest infection due to shortness of breath. This then leads to full body hives then a couple of days later facial swelling. My doctor told me this could be a reaction to stress and I had a course of oral steroids. Has anyone been told the same?
