Ive been having this problem for months.
it started with my feet. they would get itchy red warm then swell. at first i thought i was getting bitten but i never saw any marks or any bugs in my house.
then my palms, wrists, and arms started swelling. my eyelids do too, but that doesnt bother me. i also have back pain but im not sure if thats related because i do have mild scoliosis. id have about a month in between each episode and only one foot or hand would swell at a time. its started hurting more and becoming more swollen and now i have about a week in between each episode. i went to the dr he said it was strange (duh) i had xrays (although i told him he would have to xray the rest of my body too because not only that wrist would swell) blood tests for diabetes, thyroid, arthritis, and red and white blood cell counts. everything came back fine. he gave me some 500 mg naproxen and said to take it everyday. since i had already been taking aleeve and 500mg is about 2 aleeve it obviously wasn't helping, but he stuck that script on another one he gave me for something else so i accidentally got it filled. it didnt help the swelling, nothing i found has except this wrist stabilizer for carpal tunnel i bought at walgreens. that made my wrist pain go away and the swelling went down after wearing it. the only problem is im getting it in strange parts of my body now, like to the right of my pinky toe on my right foot. it looks like a rubber ball is stuck to the side of my foot right now, its red, and it hurts especially when i walk. the one that hurts the most is when it swells directly under my foot. i cant exactly buy a whole line of stabilizers for my body, not to mention i didnt see any other ones except for knees. it interferes with work, but thankfully it usually happens on my day off. i have psoriasis and psoriac arthritis crossed my mind but all the cases ive found dont appear to be like mine. when my wrist swells it looked very similar to images i found of tendinitis, but i cant find pictures of anything that looks like the rest of my swollen parts. ive started taking pictures everytime something swells so i have a collection to show my dr who seems to think im a hypochondriac. he was really shocked the first time he actually saw the swelling (when i make appts its usually gone down by the time i see him.) truth is im just a medical wonder. im only 21 by the way, and im very concerned with my health. it seems like i should be a bit older for my body to have strange issues like this. any help is appreciated. i know this can be caused by something serious. as for medications i take adderall when i have a lecture class or have to study hours, and i have implanon which is a birth control implanted in my arm (this isnt one of the side effects supposedly).

any help is appreciated.

  • You may want to look up palindromic rheumatism, which is an autoimmune arthritis that can affect different joints in a random fashion. The joints are often swollen, warm and even itchy. Also, since you have psoriasis, which is an autoimmune disorder, you are at a higher risk to have another. Usually palindromic rheumatism does not cause permanent joint damage, but it in about half of the cases, it progresses to rheumatoid arthritis. There are several treatments available that do not cure the disease but can reduce the symptoms. I chose to avoid any side effects associated with the meds and follow through with ibuprofen when I have a flare, and have been lucky to have remission periods of several months to more than a year. Good luck!

  • I was wondering if you ever got a diagnosis for this problem. My mother has been having the exact same symptoms for a few months now. It started once every month now it is once a week with the swelling becoming increasingly painful. Please let me know if you were ever diagnosed.Ive been having this problem for months. it started with my feet. they would get itchy red warm then swell. at first i thought i was getting bitten but i never saw any marks or any bugs in my house. then my palms, wrists, and arms started swelling. my eyelids do too, but that doesnt bother me. i also have back pain but im not sure if thats related because i do have mild scoliosis. id have about a month in between each episode and only one foot or hand would swell at a time. its started hurting more and becoming more swollen and now i have about a week in between each episode. i went to the dr he said it was strange (duh) i had xrays (although i told him he would have to xray the rest of my body too because not only that wrist would swell) blood tests for diabetes, thyroid, arthritis, and red and white blood cell counts. everything came back fine. he gave me some 500 mg naproxen and said to take it everyday. since i had already been taking aleeve and 500mg is about 2 aleeve it obviously wasn't helping, but he stuck that script on another one he gave me for something else so i accidentally got it filled. it didnt help the swelling, nothing i found has except this wrist stabilizer for carpal tunnel i bought at walgreens. that made my wrist pain go away and the swelling went down after wearing it. the only problem is im getting it in strange parts of my body now, like to the right of my pinky toe on my right foot. it looks like a rubber ball is stuck to the side of my foot right now, its red, and it hurts especially when i walk. the one that hurts the most is when it swells directly under my foot. i cant exactly buy a whole line of stabilizers for my body, not to mention i didnt see any other ones except for knees. it interferes with work, but thankfully it usually happens on my day off. i have psoriasis and psoriac arthritis crossed my mind but all the cases ive found dont appear to be like mine. when my wrist swells it looked very similar to images i found of tendinitis, but i cant find pictures of anything that looks like the rest of my swollen parts. ive started taking pictures everytime something swells so i have a collection to show my dr who seems to think im a hypochondriac. he was really shocked the first time he actually saw the swelling (when i make appts its usually gone down by the time i see him.) truth is im just a medical wonder. im only 21 by the way, and im very concerned with my health. it seems like i should be a bit older for my body to have strange issues like this. any help is appreciated. i know this can be caused by something serious. as for medications i take adderall when i have a lecture class or have to study hours, and i have implanon which is a birth control implanted in my arm (this isnt one of the side effects supposedly).any help is appreciated.

  • I have experienced similar, but do not know if exactly the same- this can be any flesh covered part of the body - bottom of any foot is the more painful. The wrist, lip, ball of hand, sole of feet end of my thumb - even along time ago private parts.I do not have this regular - but originally, i was advsied this may be casued by stress as an extreme symptom by an occupational health person. I this occurs right now and I know I am stressed about my next work.Keep a diary and if regular what is it connected to - food or activity, previous to the occurence and also what are you expecting to happen in teh near future or if weekly/monthly - any routines at this time?

  • I read your message and it sounds similar to what I am experiencing. The first time, I woke up and my lips and lower part of my face on one side was very swollen, hot and itchy. I went to the Dr and was given Benedryl and predisone. Then about a week later, my arm from my elbow to forearm did the same thing. And then another time, the bottom of my foot, and today my hand at the base of my thumb and into the inside of my hand. It always it hot and itches. Usually it responds to Benedryl, but that makes me so tired. Have you had any answers since you posted this that have been helpful? I am also being treated by a dermatologist for itchy patches of skin on my legs. I have a $500 tube of ointment for that. Thank goodness for good insurance.I have a stressful job also. Has anyone ever mentioned stress as a contributing factor? Thanks in advance for any response!!

  • Don't rule out the birth control, it was about 20 yrs or so ago that your symptoms sound like the ones I was getting. I went to doctor's and they couldn't figure it out, told me to make a diary of my foods and such. Tried to sign it off as pressure uticarious (not sure on that spelling). But, it got to the point if I just bumped something I would swell up in that area and it would be red and mostly uncomfortable, can't remember if it itched. I couldn't think of anything I was doing, eating or using different and I started reading the pamplet that came with the birth control, something sounded somewhat the same as I was getting so I stopped using that birth control, problem went away and I got on a different pill. Good luck, I hope it helps.

  • My son, 18 has been experiencing all the same symptoms for over two years! He did have a break in the swelling when he stress fractured his L5 and was in a back brace for 3 months. Once the brace was off,he started swelling again. After endless amounts of blood tests...all thankfully coming up negative, I am thinking his spine may be a link. We went to a wellness dr who did testing on his spine.....it showed the areas of weakness were relayed to his thymus....associated to auto immune, ( his father has an auto immune..it is hereditary) He is going to start "treatments" on his back.

  • I have had the same problems for years, underwent numerous examinations (different specialists, incl allergology, gout or rheumatism) everything with negative results. but as I have been observing myself, I found out that it swells after eating quite a lot of sweets, sugar, etc.

  • Same here. I have been taking the hard pink benedryl tablets that you can get at wal-mart for $4.00 for almost 5 years and had no symptoms when I took them . I take from 4-7 pills each night b/c it also helps me sleep(Insomnia) If I go a week without them, I start swelling in different areas. When I feel it coming on by the itching, it will swell faster and bigger when I scratch those areas(I know, don't itch then! But unless you have experienced it, it is almost torture going without scratching). Like if you get an itch on your back that is so intense, yet you cannot get it; it makes you want to scratch it with scissors or slam your back against a jagged wall to scratch it lol.

  • I'm a 23 yr old male and have these same symptoms (Itching in a spot then swelling if scratched or even if left idle.) My first one was when I was 17 on my right arm, then the next day my whole chin and following that my bottom lip. :( I have the problem less frequently now, but it is still a common occurrence (Mostly my arms and face sometimes my testicles and **** as well.) . I only get scared when the inside of my throat swells. I haven't been to any doctors. I know this thread is old but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting diagnosed. Also I wouldn't describe the swelling as being painful? It's more of a discomfort to me unless on the sole of my foot then it hurts to step on it.

  • I'm 32 and have been experiencing the same random itchy skin followed by swelling. It's so random that I can't even guess when it's going to happen, there's no pattern at all. It usually happens on my face. One time it was by my eye and it was so swollen that I though my eyeball was going to pop out. I've had it on my feet, forearm, and various other areas, but most commonly my face. Benadryl knocks it out the fastest, and I've also found that the Benadryl Gel and Ointments work faster than pills or liquids. I wish I knew what the heck was going on so we could all get over this, but my doctors are retarded and just say it's an allergy. I have over 6 months of logs and there isn't a single "one" ingredient that is the same in anything I've used, or ate that coincides with the occurrences.

  • I'm having this condition as well. I'm 36, and it just started a few weeks ago. I thought at first it was spider bites, but no wounds would show, just swelling of different parts of my body. it would go away within 48 hours to to have another location swell and feel warm again. Hands, Feet, Knees, Elbows, arms, even buttock and nether regions. I know its not any time of arthritis and its an allergy, but from what. I do know I sprayed Ortho weed b gon and thats when I started to get the swelling. I've cleaned the house, washed the sheets, shampooed the floors and I'm still getting swollen. I'm very active and it puts me down when it hits my feet, but I haven't done anything different in years, my eating habits have been the same, same soap, same toothpaste. I just don't know...

  • Im in the same boat as the rest of you. I'm 42 and been having the same symptoms over the past couple of months. The first time I experienced this was when I was 19 in the Navy, the nodules were in both feet and almost impossible to walk. I went to the doctor at that time and was prescribed a steroid that cleared them up. I didnt have another episode until this year and it started in my feet again. It went away in a couple of days but then moved to my knees and then my elbows. Its now in my left wrist, left thumb and the ball of my hand. Its got to be some sort of allergic reaction similar to hives but on the inside, its called Angioedema, http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000846.htm, but not sure as there are a hundred different symptoms that all sound the same. I'm going to lower my sugar intake and try to watch my foods and see what happens. Good luck to all of you as I know how bad this sucks!!

  • 24, same thing the best guess the Manhattan hospital doctors gave me in the last two days is a delayed allergic reaction to something I ate last week.

If they want to keep me for 3 days and run more tests they haven't found anything yet.
