Recently I was notified by a Doctor that I have emphysema. She showed me the results of a CT Scan conducted in Oct 2009. Under the findings for Lungs and Pleura: it listed the following information:
Extreme emphysematous changes bilaterally. Dependent atelectasis in the posterior lungs. No pleural effusion on either side. No significant enterval change. The Doctor basically said that I have emphysema; but did not indicate which stage.

My questions are as follows:
What does all this mean to the lay person?
Should the wife or I been notified of this finding?

Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.
