Hi y'all,

I have two basic questions on dengue fever related to a son who is performing missionary work in Brazil and who unfortunately just picked up this malady. So, a quick, informative response would be much appreciated.

1) after the first confirming platelet count, how much time is recommended between the first and second blood test and reading for platelet count? For instance, if the first reading was 80,000, would this result persuade a physician to order a second blood test sooner or later - with what time frame? Note: first test was done during the first 48 of the onset of the symptoms of dengue.

2) once a patient has contracted the dengue virus for the first time, what specific dangers exist in contracting dengue for a second time - especially in light of what I am reading about the more aggressive and threatening hemorragic {sp?} variety of dengue? Does the patient acquire any type of immunity to the disease? I believe that I recently read that there are 4 types of the virus. Please comment and advise. Thank you.
