Hi, my name is Anna and I'm new to this site. I used to just skim around and read but my symptoms have been getting worse and I could really use some help.
Around a month ago my mom suggested I go on the Atkins diet to lose a few pounds. I'm only 16 but I didn't think much of it, because I wasn't planning on shedding a whole lot. It started off pretty good, I had cravings for the old junk food but I felt fine. Then my sweet tooth kicked in and I started cheating the diet. Not everyday, but at least every three days. That's when the symptoms started coming in. I was always tired and whenever I'd go to the bathroom to poo, it'd be like pellets (sorry for the description but it's the best i could find). Then things got worse, I'd get headaches off and on, and I'd have this strange sort of dizziness, kind of like I'm out of it from time to time?
Lately it's gotten much worse, though. Now I have constipation, and it's such a hassle to go to the bathroom. Also, every time after I eat, my stomach hurts (abdominal pain? it's right underneath my belly button). I'll wake up and I know I'm hungry, I can feel it, but the moment I finish eating, my stomach hurts.
I keep thinking that's it's simple, it must be the Atkins diet, but is there any way it could be something more severe? I'm afraid that once I get off the diet, the fatigue, constipation, pain, random headaches and random dizziness will stay. Has anyone gotten this sort of reaction from this diet or any other? Should I just get off immediately?
Thank you for your help!
P.S , i'm actually going to the doctor tomorrow for a blood & urine test because my mother is really concerned. I'll update how that goes.

  • I dont think the Atkins diet is at all recommended for children (I think I remember reading that.. I go to their website at times and have played about with their diet myself). Secondly.. You may be ending up with constipation due to the diet. That can cause fatigue and your other issues, even the headaches. It does sound as if you are constipated. You'd be far better off getting on a good healthy normal kind of diet at your age. (the Atkin diet wont work if you are checking as your body needs to be in ketosis for it and the diet is working off that principle.. phase 1 of the diet gets you in ketosis.. when you eat too high carb.. you fall out of it).

  • HiI agree with Tania. She is right, you should get normal diet for your age except the case if you have some limitations (for example, abnormal glucose level, etc.). I would recommend you to check additionally your glucose level in your blood or do OGTT test for exclusion of the possible hyperglycemia/diabetes issue for sure.Hello Tania, how are you? I hope you feel better now.

  • thank you for both of your replies! i've decided to officially get off it today. also, i've been drinking lots of water, water mineral, and getting back on eating a salad everyday. already my stomach feels better. i forgot to add that in the intro that i stopped eating a lot of vegetables. maybe the reason for all this was pretty obvious all along haha

  • alltimehelp. Im completely exhausted .. its 5.20pm and Ive just got out of bed where Ive spent past couple of hrs resting hoping my energy would pick up but I just keep falling asleep as Im struggling to stay awake and waking up 5mins or so later. Im trying very very hard to stay awake as if I fall asleep now.. means I wont sleep tonight and ive worked real hard bringing my circardian sleep disorder issue to a regular sleep time and need to be up in the morning to go to another town and get the glucose monitor.. I was so hoping that once I got my sleep a normal time that the rest of my bodies biorhythms would correct themselves but obviously my hormonal system isnt changing (its had two weeks now of me getting to sleep at a normal persons time) and is still following the same out of wack set pattern with me now loosing the time I feel more active and up to doing more things, as im now asleep due to the melatonin at that time my rhythms are more active.. then still feeling tired and falling asleep during the day, even thou ive forced my body to sleep at a normal persons time. So all the getting myself to sleep at a normal persons time has done is cut down the hours Im managing to be awake. I think? I burnt inside my mouth the other day.. seeing its healed I dont think it was funga thing and think it may of been caused by the burn. I'd developed rough patch of skin on the inside of my lip which then the area the next day was white patch. A couple of days earlier I'd taken a big mouthful of water from a cup which I forgot I'd just put boiling water into (due to my memory issues) and as I was laying on my back.. I couldnt spit immediately out the boiling water as I had to sit up first or spit it and burn all my chest. Ended up with a sore mouth for 24hrs but that got better but then a few days later I noticed I had that weird rough patch. I take just one day at a time.. trying to just get throu and sort my issues out. I'll probably end up taking up your suggestion but right now are just trying to follow up all my specialists suggestions. Currently feeling too overwhelmed with all my medical issues to take up trying yet another thing right now.

Actually I'm not much familiar with medications, I prefer use acupuncture for treatment (it's much safer and natural, without chemical poisoning and side-effects), but in some cases I can arrange drugs prescriptions based on my acupuncture recipe. Usually the number of these cases are very limited because modern medicine can not manage the complicated pathologies, it's very difficult and in many cases impossible to select medications for contradicted pathologic processes in human organs and tissues. What did you take (besides melatonin) for your sleep disorder issue? What about the solutions you have tried for hypoglycemia issue? Any hormonal medications?I understand you and how you are tired, but please don't give up! Anyway there are chances to win! Just try to get more relaxation and rest for now.My solution I offered you requires much less efforts than you made before, and promises to be more effective help than you had before, but it's up to you to decide.Wish you good health and good luck!
