Pressure in my head

For the last 9 months I have had an intense pressure inside my head. It feels like my brain has expanded. I do not feel pain, but it is very uncomfortable. The pressure builds up when I reach or bend or try to think and I often hear my heart pounding in my head. I am in a brain fog and my cognitive abilities (concentration, memory, etc) have deteriated drastically. I am irritable and unable to function and can no longer work.
I'm not sure if this is related to the head pressure but when I raise my arms over my head, my face turns purple and the pressure buildup is so intense I feel like I may pass out. I've had ultrasounds on my cartoid arteries and they were normal.
I'm also constantly sleepy and have been diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia (I'm not sure if this is related to the head pressure or not).
I've had a Cat scan on my head and the results were normal. My doctors have offered no explanations. Has anyone out there experienced similar symptoms?? Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I am an obese 57 year old female.

  • Of course if you are really obese you are putting a lot of intraabdominal pressure on the diaphragm and that tends to block circulation and make your head feel pressurized but this is just the obvious so let's consider two more possibilites. One is that you have a blockage of CSF flow in the cranium and that might require a shunt. Another is that you most likely have some cervical degeration at the C1 level (also called the Atlas). This disc is sort of winged shaped and on the outer portion of each wing is an opening through which blood is transported (or not) into the cranium. This is kind of a tortous path (requiring some sharp turns for the blood vessels entering the cranium) and could be the source. Probably would need an ultrasound to test this.I also wonder if this head pressure still continues after you donate blood or is it temporarily relieved?
