Post surgery numbness

My son recently had surgery for carpel tunnel. His hand was extremely
weak for a while, but is getting stronger.
Now his thumb has become numb. The doctor says this is unrelated to the
carpel. He says it's probably a spine thing.
Could something in the surgical process have caused this?
