I went to the doctors a couple of weeks back, had a blood test after I told my doc my symptoms including Headache, dizziness, itchy skin, shortness of breath and fatigue. I researched my symptoms and came across the disease of the red blood cells called polychthemia vera since i have so many of the symptoms i wonder why my doctor didn't test for it, he says there's nothing wrong with me. does anyone know if their is a special blood test to use to diagnose? can someone please help me out? thankyou, should i go back to the docs and ask for another blood test.

  • I saw your post and just had to resopnd. My son has a polycythemia. He does not have polycythemia vera. But the treatment is almost the same. If the doctor would do a simple CBC. (Complete Blood Count) it would determine if your blood counts were high. You would have to do further testing to see if you did in fact have PV but a CBC would let you know if you needed to proceed further. They would just take a little blood to do the CBC and it only takes about 30 minutes to get results.Good Luck with everythingGod BlessKristin

  • thanks for your reply i had a blood test a few weeks back tests: ESR, CBC, Ferritin/ Iron. the only thing i was told that my iron and feritin levels were quite high.I forget the name of the disease but high iron levels can be alleveated very easily by donating blood. IN fact that is the treatment for the disease I cannot recall the name of. I heard about it on NPR. The body stores too much iron and the only treatment for it is to get rid of it. The person talking about it had the disease and was an expert on ?? but talked about how the people using blood letting in the middle ages ect. were not too far off the mark.
