Hi ! I am a M, 32 yrs and suffering from constant bouts of sore throat and "lump in the throat" sensation. Been on 2 courses of Amoxillin (5 days each) and anti allergy therapy in the last 15 days but of no avail. Here are the latest figures :

Total Leucocyte count - 14.7 thousand
Absolute Eosophonil count - 570

Both of these won't come down (I had the tests both before the antibotic and antiallergy therapy and after completing it)

Amazingly the Differential Lecocyte count is absolutely within range (%) for both the times I had the tests done. I had a sinus X-Ray done. Mucosal thickening in both sinuses.

I am also spitting blood in my mucus for the last 7 days in the morning. The lump in the throat is extremely scary. Am I having Cancer ? Why aren't the antibiotics / anti-allegic therapy responding ?

Any other tests that I need to get done. Could this be fungal ? I have been a smaker for the last 15 yrs (20 /day) I am scared to death ... Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks !

  • See an ear-nose-throat doctor (otolaryngologist) to rule out the cancer. If there is any abnormality structurally, he'll find it. Ten days of antibiotics and fifteen days of allergy treatment is not sufficient to rule out allergy, but the ENT will find that if it's there. I suspect the blood is just irritation. If all is normal there, check your thyroid, which straddles the base of the throat. If that gland expands, it presses on your upper esophagus and makes you feel like you have a lump there (I have autoimmune thyroiditis, and that's one of the symptoms I watch for to catch a flare-up). See an endocrinologist to straighten that out.Good luck, and don't be too worried; cancer is pretty far down the list of possibilities right now.
