We are in Ontario, Canada. My daughter (14 years old), has had this stomach pain for almost one and a half months now. It is mostly right in the solar plexus region radiating to the back and sometimes only in the upper abdomen or only in the back. The family doctor ordered blood tests and urine analysis including the H-Pylori, GGT, ESR, Lead level etc. all of which came in OK (3 weeks after ordering them). In the absence of test results, seeing her continual pain, the doctor started her off on the H Pack. The pain never ceased, so much so that we were sitting in emergency twice for all night as the pain became unbearable. Tylenols do not help and the doctor has advised against any other forms of pain killers. The doctor in emergency, did the blood test and urine test which he said were fine and said the pain was due to Gastric ulcers. He prescribed Omeprazole DR 20MG (1 tab twice daily). After finishing the H Pack, the family doctor asked us to continue Omeprazole DR 20MG (1 tab twice daily). In between the doctor had ordered abdominal Ultra sound too which came in OK too. Apparently the doctor has been treating her for Gastric ulcer till now. After the blood results, the doctor has now ordered Upper GI XRay (Barium test) for which we could get an appointment two weeks from now.

The pain tapered off around 5 days back and my daughter was able to go to school for 4 days, albeit with all care in terms of food intake (which has been very light, small meals, mostly yoghurt & soup). Since yesterday, the pain has returned with a vengeance and since last night she has been writhing in pain with urges to throwup intermittently. The family doctor says we have no option but to wait for the upper GI Xray results and she is trying to get us an appointment with a gastroenterologist (which will seemingly be at least a month or two from today). The doctors in emergency have sent us back twice already after all night waits because they also feel a specilist needs to look into it further. In the meanwhile we keep awake all night and now all day, watching our daughter crying and writhing in pain not knowing what to do, on the verge of a collective breakdown.

I need help and any suggestions on the following lines will be welcome -
1- Knowing we have no option but to wait till a specilist sees my daugher, what do we do to alleviate her pain?
2- Is our family doctor on the right track in terms of diagnosis?
3- With the paucity of specialist doctors in our country, are we likely to keep suffering like this till we get to see one or is there any other way of having my daughter seen, rightly diagnosed and treated when she needs it most?
4- Any other suggestions to help us get help for our daughter.

  • Make sure they investigate gall bladder. I was 19 when I had symptoms like you are describing. She may have some very small gravel/stones stuck in the tube that carries the bile. Could you go to another hospital/doctor to get a second opinion? If this is what your daughter has I understand the type of pain she has, it is the worse thing IPeople are getting gall bladder problems younger and younger. I am now 54 so she could possibly have them. Just a thought, not a doc, but sounds like me years ago.
