My left foot, ankle and leg have been swollen for about 5 years. The swelling stops just below the knee.I have seen several doctors and they have determined it is not DVT. Also, when i am standing, both of my legs have a purple discoloration. The discoloration goes away when i am sitting or lying down. Does anyone have any ideas???? I greatly appreciate any responses. Thanks!

Again, thank you both for your responses. That's what I am about to say :) I was just trying to confirm my assumptions. IBS is linked to pancreas problems.I don't believe in IBS- I believe in underlying causes- It might be your pancreas!IBS is a bs diagnosis...it masks the root of it, and no one ever finds out until their pancreas is sicker...What you are describing is the Meridian path of the Pancreas, in Chinese medicine...every point from your big toe to your knee are assigned to IBS symptoms...but of course that meridian can hurt for other reasons.People with gout and arthritis also get pain in that zone, even when they don't have the IBS symptoms.Do you notice if your cheese, milk, egg, bread, cake, sugar, alcohol intake increased right before or during the time that the pain starts?Avoiding those food items might not be enought.Look for an Acupuncturist- and perhaps a NAET doctor.Best,Fruit.

Thanks!I have something similar and was diagnosed with statis dermatitis.I saw a Dermatologist to get a proper diagnosis. Mine was caused by cellulitis but ultimately caused by untreated hypothyroidism.I wear compression hose to keep the statis dermatitis from worsening. The statis dermatitis causes venous insufficiency.Of course there could be other causes. Diabetes causing the problems too.

Pancreas defficiency is behind all of it.Please look into Acupuncture and/or NAET, it can solve so much pain and discomfort before the underlying causes start manifesting differently.Best,Fruity.

  • Pancreas, general functions (Spleen in TCM)Governs Transformation and Transportation The spleen is responsible for the intake, processing, and shipping out of food and fluid. From the food and fluid, the spleen derives key components of making qi and blood and is thus the primary organ looked at when these two essential substances are not balanced. The spleen extracts the qi of the food (gu qi), and sends it up to the heart and lungs. In the heart, it combines with the pre-natal qi to form blood. In the lungs, it combines with the qi of the air (kong qi) and the original qi (yuan qi) to form the True or Upright Qi (zhen qi). It is this final type of qi that will be sent through the blood and channels of the rest of the body. When functioning properly: qi is strong, digestion goes smoothly, body is kept moist. When malfunctioning: qi is weak (lassitude), appetite is poor, digestion is sluggish, stools may be loose, phlegm and damp may accumulate. Controls the Blood As just said, the spleen is the key to the manufacturing of blood and is thus in control of its quantity in the body. Additionally, the spleen qi holds the blood in the vessels. Thus if the spleen qi is weak there may be hemorrhaging or spilling over of blood. Controls the Muscles and Four Limbs This ties into the transformation and transportation function of the spleen to spread nutrients to the muscles and tissues. If the spleen is weak, the limbs and muscles aren't nourished and they become weak and tired. Opens into the Mouth Mastication is necessary to the function of the spleen, thus it is functionally related. Also, if the spleen is weak, the sense of taste may dull. Manifests in the LipsRed and vibrant lips are the domain of the spleen. When the spleen is deficient the lips may turn pale from lack of nourishment. Controls Upright QiThe upright qi is that which holds the body, particularly the organs right and in place. It is like the gravity fighting force of the body, that without the organs would all by lying at the bottom of your abdomen. Thus if the qi is weak, prolapses may occur. Houses ThoughtThe spleen is directly related to our capacity for thinking. How well we manage things that require concentration is dependent on the strength of the spleen. So if you wanna ace that test, make sure your spleen qi is strong. Some translation use different words, some indicate worry as much as thought. Possibly it is meant that the spleen controls how much we overthink and analyze and when strong the spleen is weak it can't keep the mind from running through things over and over.Check this, see if it matches- it does not have to match 100%.Also Blood Stagnation os pretty common these days.Blood Stagnation (Stasis) Blood Stagnation is where the normal flow of Blood has become obstructed. Stagnant Blood can occur in the channels (usually due to trauma), or in the internal Zang Fu (Yin Yang) Organs, mainly in the Liver, Heart, Uterus, Intestines and Stomach. Heat in the Blood also eventually causes blood to stagnate/congeal, as does Internal Cold. General Symptoms of Blood Stagnation Stabbing fixed painDark complexionPurple lips and nailsDark blood and clots if there is bleeding Tongue Red purple if there is HeatBlue purple if there is ColdPossible purple or red spots Pulse Wiry or choppy pulse

  • Hello everyone. I would like to add a few things about my situation. The swollen leg is not red. When the swelling first started it was in my foot and toes(except big toe). It then moved up to my ankle within a week. Within two weeks it was up to my knee. I have had test after test and they all come back normal. Here are just a few from a long list: EKG/HOLTER MONITOR/COLONOSCOPY(sorry about spelling)/ UPPER GI/ VARIOUS BLOOD TESTS CONCERNING MY LIVER,PANCREAS,THYROID,LUNGS,KIDNEYS,HEART/ DOPPLER ULTRASOUND ON THE SWOLLEN LEG. Those are just a few of many, but all of the tests i've ever had come back normal. Also, the purple discoloration in my legs is only there when i'm standing. When i'm lying down, my legs are a normal color. I have been to so many doctors and none of them have ever been able to figure this out or help me. I don't know if this makes any difference, but i am in my 20's. Thanks so much for any and all responses.

It is good that the disorders don't show in your blood...it means it has not made that much progress. It is good to catch it as early as possible. There might not be a diagnosis, as Oriental Medicine evaluates the patient, not the sickness.Best-Frui.

I am not sure of his symptoms. When I read your post I thought about that. Just a thought. Maybe it's worth talking to the doctor about. Good luck to you, I hope you are able to find out what it is.

  • I was watching a tv show and they were talking about worms or parasites that attach to the legs from dirty water in foreign countries. I think it would be impossible to prove because they may have settled deep in the lymphatics, but a serious natural worm program probably would not hurt you. Have you traveled any?

  • Also, when i am standing, both of my legs have a purple discoloration. The discoloration goes away when i am sitting or lying down. Does anyone have any ideas???? I greatly appreciate any responses. Thanks! The leg discolouration.. can be red or purplish.. I've seen pictures of it of people who have Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. I tried to find the picture I saw in the past of someones legs going that colour due to standing but cant find it. The colour thou of the leg change was caused by the BLOOD POOLING IN THE LEGS while the body tried to regulate things due to the posture change. (The site i saw the pic at, had a very good explaination of it all about about how the heart was affecting things). I doubt if you have POTS thou as you didnt say you get dizzy etc on standing but the fact of your legs going that colour on standing.. could be due to the same reason as why POTS patients can have that problem going on.
