i have taken my son to 2 differents doctors and i have not really been listened too or helped! he frequently soils in his underwear everday!. he uses the toilet to pee in but never #2. so both drs say the diagnosis is encopresis. my problem with this is that he is not constipated, infact he goes at least 3 or more times a day in his underwear. the other problem i can't seemed to get across is that he stool is soft but it's rarely formed! i tried to discuss possible food allergies with both docs. and both dismissed me. i don't know where to turn. could he have both? could it be something else? how do i find out?

  • My 4 year old had the same problem. He was diagnosed with IBS (I disagree), I quit asking doctors and just changed his diet, and it worked. He no longer had juice or other things that help you go, and once it got through and he learned how to use the muscles, he can now eat and drink anything.

  • Encopresis may be a correct term to label the condition as it's just involuntary defecation. Was he previously potty trained and has regressed back to wetting his pants? Do you think that it may be some sorta urge incontinence as he can't get to the bathroom fast enough to defecate? Certainly if ever BM he is having is wet and diarrhea (not just soft) I would be worried about fluid and electrolyte imbalances. Does anyone in your family have food allergies like lactose? It doesn't sound if it's just soft that it would be anything to be worried about unless it was constantly very wet. If you feel that it could be some sorta food allergy than I would try to eliminate things in his diet to see if it improves. If he has never been fecally continent then I wouldn't really count it towards a medical condition. Hopefully, whatever may be the cause, I hope you find some sorta resolution! Good luck!
