  • Dear Kathy,Because your brother has been diagnosed with an Alzheimer's like dementia as well as Parkinson's disease, you may want to take a look at the book Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, which basically states that aspartates and glutamates may be a cause of these two diseases as well as some other diseases. The book refers to a lot of studies and was written by a doctor so this isn't quack science. For instance, he mentions that the country with the highest consumption of MSG has the highest rate of Parkinson's in the world (Okinawa). You've heard of the MSG headache. Kind of makes one wonder. The book is a bit technical in places, explaining what happens in cells when aspartates and glutamates are ingested. Basically they excite brain cells and burn them out prematurely. They used to put MSG in baby food, but fortunately have taken them out. There is a ban on using MSG or any glutamate in baby food now, but you wonder how many children of that period will develop alzheimers much earlier in life than they would have if they had not ingested MSG at all.I read recently that alzheimers is on the rise in even younger people in the age group as your brother and I wonder if it is because of these artificial additives. I had a professor who consumed large amounts of MSG who died of Alzheimers and I really wonder if it was the cause. Of course, one cannot argue from the single instance to the general, but increasingly there are doctors who are saying they think that MSG and aspartame are damaging to human health.See this web site for instance all articles within written by doctors:http://www.dorway.com/symptoms.htmlSome theorize that Gulf War Syndrome may be the result of aspartate-laden sodas that weren't refrigerated and were thus heated by the desert sun until the aspartate broke down into two products. Read this article:http://www.dorway.com/drlydon.txtAlso mentioned in that article is that in the "May 1992 edition of their journal, flying Safety, the United States Air Force warned all pilots to stay off aspartame, stating:some people have suffered aspartame related disorders with doses assmall as that carried in a single stick of chewing gum. This could meana pilot who drinks diet sodas is more susceptible to flicker vertigo, orflicker-induced epileptic activity. It also means that all pilots arepotential victims of sudden memory loss, dizziness during instrumentflight and gradual loss of vision."I guess the question is, was your brother a consumer of products with aspartame, MSG, hydrolized vegetable protein or bouillion cubes listed as ingredients?
