It all started when I blacked out when getting out of my car. I have got right sided parathesia and occational jerking movements. I am now also having periodic paralysis where I can not move or talk for an hour or so. I have some brain function probems in memory and concentration.

I have been off work for five months now and all the Doctors can tell me is that it is psychological.
I am not crazy

Can any one shed some light?

  • Hi, there are many problems that can cause paralysis and wouldn't like to speculate too much, but MS, MG and even epilspsy could be a cause. Have they done any tests ? I too suffer from a PP and because all my test are normal, Neuro reckons I should see a psychotherapist and psychologist too. I am not crazy either (mostly) but there attitude is driving me that way! However I have seen a few Drs who sez it looks like potassium sensitivity and I can link my attacks to all the triggers of Hyperkalemic PP. There are other forms of pp caused by mutations on the sodium channel genes for the muscles which don't show up on reg tests and only occassionally on blood tests. They can do a simple oral potassium test to see if I react. But despite my insistence on them doing this and going to Oxford in the belief this is what they were doing, they only did an EEG which was normal (Duh) and no Oral K test! I have had it since last Jan. I am 28 years old and have had to leave 2 jobs and am now on benefits until I get a diagnosis so I can manage or treat it. Why do they insist it is in our heads without going down the obvious routes first ? Stress is a trigger, but I get breathing difficulties worse case, sometimes only my voice goes. All my limbs can be affected or just one! It varies from 2 mins to 4 hours and I can be ok for a few days or have many attacks in one day. Slightly inconvenient too!Perservere as no one will care more about your health than you! Becki

  • Oh and I get mytonias too resulting in contortions, spasms and twitches of varying degrees although less frequently than the paralysis. It can leave me exhausted and hungry when bad.

  • Type In Periodic Paralyses On Google You Get A Very Useful Website - Periodic Paralysis Newsdesk - There's A Chart Comparing Symptoms Associated With Pp's Due To Different Causes - As Someone In A Similar Mess, I Found It Helpful After I Read It Carefully - None Of The Uk Docs I've Seen Have Apparently Even Heard Of Pp's, Altho Rare, They Exist Alright, Read It ! Best Of Luck

  • Please let me know if you have found anything else. I have the same exact thing and my doctors have been giving me so many different drugs and experimental cures it is making me sick. I was told it was Hemiplegic Migraines and now they are saying they think it is depression. But I am not depressed!!! I have been out of work for about 3 months and have 3 to 4 episodes that last 5 to 25 minutes each per day. It is scarring getting these periodic paralysis episodes and have prevented myself from driving unnecessarily.
