Doctors in Vietnam, have ran all tests, and could not figure out what is happing to her because all the results were normal. The virus test is the one that is not available there. So any doctor or any one has experienced such case???and please reply to me to let me know what is the sickness that my relative is caring? Thanks

  • Dear Anhthaobenhnhan,I am very sorry to hear about the condition of your relative. First, it would be good to know more details about your relatives condition for paralysis can be caused multiple ways. One interesting thing however is the details about the flu and the paralysis of the limbs with the need to be put on a respirator. Although you would need the diagnosis of a well trained doctor, the onset of paralysis after having the flu or other acute infection can be caused by a condition known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Its an extremely rare auto-immune disorder, a condition in which the body mistakes its own cells as foreign after fighting off a pathogen which resembles its own cells. Think about it like this: imagine our immune system as a blind police force and it recognizes its own cells its supposed to protect by reading their braille name tags. This braille tells the immune system that they are part of the body. Sometimes a virus comes in with a braille name tag that is very close to the ones our cells have. It goes on high alert and finds any viruses with that name tag only afterwards it cant tell if its own cells are the virus or the part of the body anymore because the name tags were so similar. Now, this blind police force starts attacking anything that has that similar name tag including its own cells. In Guillain-Barre syndrome the body starts attacking its own nerve cells and can lead to paralysis. Although the flu followed by paralysis does not mean that it IS Guillain-Barre as this may just be a coincidence talk to your doctor or read about it from a reputable website such. I've included the link below for some follow up reading. It also wont hurt to suggest it to your relative's doctors in Vietnam. I wish you the best of luck and I hope it is resolved in the happiest of outcomes.Sincerely,DanielMy relative whose arms are paralyzing and she is breathing through a machine after getting a flu about eight months ago.
