pap smear report

I am 38 and had a pap smear recently..the report says inflamed cells...doc says wait and watch...I have irregular periods and have been having constant dull pain in the pelvis and abdomen (left side), and also whenever i have my periods they are painful and heavy and clotty...Can anyone tell me if i shud worry or shud i wait and watch as the doc suggests.

  • if you are worried about it... have them repeat the test and do a HPV test (for all strains). HPV is the virus that causes cervical cancer. If it comes back with any of the high risk strains... I would watch the paps more closely. Also-- quit smoking if you do... as smoking can make your body not fight off HPV and it will progress from CIN 1 to CIN 3 into invasive cancer more quickly. Honestly-- as long as you keep getting paps-- I would not worry about it. Like 70% of American women are HPV positive and even if you have a high risk strain with 3 to 6 month paps and things like LEEPs available... the chances of it progressing to actual cancer is small. Hang in there... and find a gyno who will take the time to explain all of this to you.
