Pains in my tongue after I smoke

I get funny dull pains down either side of my tongue. This happens more often when I smoke a cigarette. I am worried I have some form of tongue cancer or the begining of it. I have been to my doctor who laughed at me, looked at my tongue and said it looks fine. It does look fine but I still feel the pain?? Anyone have any suggestions or have heard of this before??
