My boyfriend is getting sharp shooting pians up the left side of his neck, somewhat into his ear that then sends a sharp pain down the side of his tongue to the tip. His Dr has no clue, there is no signs of any infections of visual reason for the pain. He is seeing an ear/nose/throat specialist next week.
He is very worried in the meantime, does anyone have any idea's?

  • No one has any idea's on this one?Has anyone ever had pain in their tongue before?? I just never heard of that.. he says it comes and goes and it not as bad as first day or 2 but it is still there.I thought maybe he had a lymph gland infection spreading up into his jaw, but DR says no.

  • Does he have any facial/head piercings? Sometimes they will injure a facial nerve and cause similar symptoms...

He is seeing an ear/nose/throat specialist next week.He is very worried in the meantime, does anyone have any idea's?He should try going to a dentist or endodontist for check-up and full dental x-rays....these can be signs of a tooth abscess. The nerve that runs through the lower jaw, connects to the tongue. I know this because I had the same symptoms. Problem was no dental x-ray, MRI, or CT scan ever picked it up and I suffered terrible pain for almost 3 years. My dentist finally just drilled into a tooth that was a tad bit loose and slightly sensitive to cold - and there it was! The tooth was neucrotic with just a little bit of live nerve left. The medical community (vs the dental community) was of no help at all. There is not always swelling when a tooth is abscessed. Also, localized infection of this kind does NOT show up in blood tests. Hope this helps.Jean

  • Forgot to mention another possibility - TMJ?? I guess what I'm saying is that you should check with those in the dental community, as well as the medical. My experience has been that there is little "communication" between these two professions. Jean

  • Thanks.. I did tell him that he should see his dentist as well.I know it is possible it is related to his teeth - even though he takes exceptionally good care of his teeth, he does not have one cavity. But I did tell him he should check anyway.. thanks fo rthe post!

  • ok... so what has he found out? I just started having the same thing today around 2pm...eating dinner was awful! It isn't constant pain, but if I move my tongue or swallow sometimes it shoots pain up my neck to my ear or even down into my shoulder and it definitely hurts in the back of my tongue where it connects to the esophagus (sp?). I can press all around my teeth and jaw with no pain. It's on my right side though. It almost feels like a muscle spasm in my tongue and neck.

  • well he really didn't find out anything. He went to the specialist, he did all kinds of tests and found nothing. The pain has pretty much gone away now. It was all very strange. He is supposed to go back again in 6 weeks for a re-check. I guess not finding anything is a good sign as long as the pain has gone.In your case, I would get checked with your Dr and Dentist..
