My wife feels a acute pain at a spot just below/inside the thumb, we have been to numerous doctors and have done MRI as well but to no avail. The pain is not continious but it happens when she hits something on the same spot. It's more prominent during winters.

could you please help?

  • It sounds like it could be degenerative joint disease of the M-P joint or the carpal-metacarpal joint . THis is a wear and tear type of condition and typically does get a bit worse in cold or damp weather.

  • If that in fact is what you have, then there is no permanent cure for DJD, but it can be somewhat controlled by warm water soaks of the hand or warm parafin wax baths of the hand, also you can try massagmg in analgesic ointments . You may want to try a temporary light elastic bandage wrap around the area to protect it and help it settle down. Good luck.
