Hi, I had a fall from a horse 2yrs ago which resulted in a forward fall going uphill ona smooth stone rock face with most impact through my left elbow / shoulder + head. I had a very deep bruise on my elbow and was very stiff in neck + shoulder for about 2 months and then eased off to only being a problem after strenous use. In March this year I was out riding, turned my head to see traffic from behind and there was ALOT of pain + crunching. Since then I have had worsening pain in my neck, mainly on the left hand side. I think the SCM muscle is quite enlarged compared with on my right hand side, it is like a really thik piece of rope, but tender all the way along it and just at the top of my neck (both sides) the pain is worse. It restricts my movement both up + down as well as to the side (left is worse) sometimes 'catching' + also started suffering from very bad headaches.. i suppose heading more towards migraines really - searing pain + hurting eyes + nauseous too.

I know I should probably go to the doctor but at 22yrs old I have already been to lots for knee issues, hearing, chronic sinusitis and am sure they are getting tired of my (usually horse related) injuries!

Hoping someone may be able to tell me if this is more a muscular problem than spinal. Getting to my wits end really as the pain is getting worse + more restricting.

Many Thanks

I recommend that you see a doctor, and possibly see if your doctor would be OK with seeing a chiropractor or osteopath. Usually what happens is after your back/neck is injured, nerves and muscles around that injured area cause problems. Taking Advil or a muscle relaxant will help relax the muscles. I personally use pressure point treatments on my neck pain. A good massage therapist will know how to administer pressure point therapy. Deep tissue massage with pressure points on affected areas can make a big difference.Untreated neck and back pain tends to get worse with time.

  • I suggest seeing a physiotherapist or chiropractor. They should be able to give you a good diagnosis.

  • The "pain + crunching" part caught my eye, as I know exactly what you mean! I had some pretty bad neck problems that I was sure were going to need major medical intervention. Turned out to be a misalignment, and a chiropractor cleared me right up.

  • I agree! it happened to me when I was pregnant, I lifted my shoulders off the couch by lifting my weight with the back of my head, crunch!! I couldn't move my neck and was in excruciating pain!! It was about ten till five (closing time!) and my husband pulled out the phone book and called chiropractors until he found one that would stay and wait for me. He felt around and adjusted and within just a little while I was able to move again! Usually the chiropractor is relatively inexpensive to visit too, you should definitely give it a try!
