Hi there to everyone. I am posting this on behalf of my dear hubby who is very far away from me and cant see a "regular" doctor. His hand was hurting on Sunday. The back of his hand, from his large knuckles to his wrist joint. He cant remember any injury just that it started as a small pain.. He spent many about 3 days and nites out in the "field". On the fourth day the back of his hand was swollen to 3x its regular size. He had full mobilty of all his fingers and none of his fingers or toes are swollen., only the back of his hand. Puffy and hard. He was taken in for x-rays to find no fracture or brake of any kind. Tonite it is still swollen to almost 2x its size and still pains some even after being put on mild muscle relaxers and strong pain meds.
The puzzling part is that the cold (-28 or so) seems to made his hand worse, or swell more. No reason has been found so far BUT we are starting to find that he may have pretty high blood pressure, for no good reason. Could his swelling hand be a symptom of his high blood pressure? Like a warning sign, maybe?
I dont even know how to look for what I want to know, if anyone has a good ideas or have heard of this kind of thing could ya please post a response!
thank you for your time!

The puzzling part is that the cold (-28 or so) seems to made his hand worse, or swell more. This could be the first sign of Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is what happened with my husband. He had some cold or illness and then afterwards his left hand swelled up huge. It hurt bad. Cold and wet made the pain worse. He could move his fingers just fine. Also the pain killers did very little for the pain but a 40mg dose of prednisone took the pain completely away. However, when this went away, his foot had a problem and this time the symptoms all worsened with redness, swelling, and pain. Then that went away and next time it was a knee. When it came back to a hand his fingers were involved for the first time. He was 64 when he got RA. You can get it at any age and it's more common in women than men. It runs in families too. He's now on Methotrexate and Prednisone for the RA.
