so, i'm a 17 year old girl and back in january i had a small skiing accident. i was on a slope where i was cut off by a snowboarder. i ended up falling off the side of the slope, down about 15-20 feet. i came out without any issues, except i couldn't move my left hand. my hand still hurt alot on the joint in my thumb to the small round like bone right before my wrist. i thought it was just jammed so i took an advil or two every day, but the pain never went away.

in march, i went to a doctor who x-rayed it and said nothing was wrong, but if pain persists, got to an orthepedic. in early april i went to an orthepedic who x-rayed it again and said that it was broken, but there was nothing that he could do, and it will heal in about 6 weeks. i just got it x-rayed again a few days ago, and this doctor said it will heal by itself in 6 weeks. i told him that, all the other doctors said the same thing, but he just told me that these things take time.

my hand doesn't hurt as long as i don't move it, and thank goodness i write with my right hand. i don't think i have a misdiagnosis, i just want to know if it really will heal by itself.

  • Hi Slipp,It does seem like a long time, but bones that are set properly (and you don't mention any problem with that) ought to heal themselves. Perhaps the problem is just that it is your thumb, and it gets too much use, even if it is your left hand. The other thing could be the Advil. "Swelling" is blood infusing a place that is injured. That blood/swelling is a necessary component of healing. If you are still taking Advil, try switching to Tylenol/Acetaminophen for the pain. Allow some swelling: it is part of the healing process. And of course, if it gets worse, or doesn't seem to be getting better, give the orthopedic doc a call back.Best,Shula
