off and on kneecap pain

i've had off and on pain in my left kneecap all my life and i'm curious what causes it and if there are ways to treat or cure it. the pain feels as if its below the kneecap but its hard to tell.

  • sounds like it could be chondromalacia patella. Does it feel like it is under the kneecap about center? If so, it's a tracking problem of the kneecap. Also called runner's knee or housemaid's knee, but you don't have to be an athlete to get it as indicated by a third name, secretary's knee. Women tend to get it more frequently because the muscles that keep the knee cap tracking properly may function differently than in men. Some think it's because they tend to be weaker. Others think it's because our hips are wider and thus that changes the forces on the knees.You can hear the knee click as you bend and straighten it slowly. That's how my doctor diagnosed it in me. The osteopath missed it. Just goes to show you, listening carefully is always a good skill to have.You may have to bend over to hear it. It's not the audible pop of knees when you bend down that's due to air being released. This sound is more subtle like a clicking. You might even be able to feel the change in the tracking if you put a finger on the knee and feel the kneecap "jump" to a different "track". Touch the other knee for comparison.Whether or not you have it, I recommend MSM, chondroiton and glucosamine. Cream forms are highly effective as MSM can be absorbed through the skin. But I'd recommend a supplement as well. Also, niacinamide is great for knees as is turmeric (found in curry powder). Ginger is also great for any nausea you might have from knee pain.You'll want to learn some exercises to strengthen the VMOs. There are some great simple exercises that can help, which you can do sitting until you feel up to other more vigorous strengthening exercises like bicycle riding. If you find a book on knee health they might have these or a book on pilates would have them. But I can try to explain a couple here. Sitting in a chair with your feet on the floor, press your feet against the floor as if you are trying to push the floor away from you. This may actually raise you slightly off the chair. Relax and repeat. Do both legs as these are strengthening exercises. Or you can alternate between the legs. Another exercise. Put a cloth on the floor and mop the floor with it by placing a leg on top of the cloth and pull it towards the other leg. I don't think surgery is necessary if you choose a nutritional approach. However, you should get your knee checked out to make sure you don't have a torn ligament, which might require surgery.

  • Go see a doctor about ruling out Lukemia or any back pain that radiates to your knee.

  • wow ive had the same problem with my knee. i tore cartalege in my knee a couple of years ago i went to my doctor and he said i had osteoarthritis(which sucks when your 15!). that may be it

  • Sorry to hear about your knee! Does it get better with pressure? Or heat? Or does it feel better when you apply ice on it? These are all things to consider that will help figure out the etiology or cause of the problem. If you apply ice to it, that will do 2 things: first decrease any swelling that you may have and also- decrease your pain level (numb it). If you apply heat to it and it hurts more- then there is some type of inflammation and ice is your best bet. I'm a massage therapist and years ago I worked in sports medicine and rehab. The BEST treament is to ICE first, then HEAT, then ICE again. What this combo does is 1. decreases any swelling (makes you more comfortable and reduces tissue edema) then 2. HEAT (increases new bloodflow to the area which has a nutritive affect and starts the healing process.) 3. Then ice again (mild) to assist with the pain factor. This combo has proven many times to be the one with the best results. Also I am training to become a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and in our acupuncture clinic we see great results on all types of pain disorders and joint problems. Sometimes with very few visits.
