Hello

several months ago i began to get short period of numbness on on the right side of my face. at the begining, they lasted between several hours and half a day. later I experienced a longer period of numbness that included for a other symptoms as well. it lasted for about 10 days during which i had hard time concentrating on anything, my right face was a bit numb and it began to feel as if it was crawling thru my veins starting from bellow the ear heading towards my temple and then towards the corner of my lip. it felt as thrubing pulsation that was moving. towards the end, i experienced other strange symptoms as well but then it calmed down. the numbness remained a bit but generally calmed down. i went to a genaral doctor who said that she couldnt diagnose anything and directed my to a neural doctor. the neural doctor in turn did basic physical exams testing my motor ability, precision and so forth. then she deduced that nothing was wrong and to spend more time in the gym. the symptoms continued and began to increase. so i went to another doctor. this time the doctor as well was not able to diagnose anything, my blood was tested for inflamation, cholesterol, hemogloebin and all were "good". now during the past two weeks the symptoms have increased, its as if the veins are alive and throbbing and i feel pressure on my temple all the time. the same area of my face that is numb has began to feel a burning sensation as if having just excersized and a tingling on my temple and arround the corner of my lips. im drowsy and tired all the time and feel best right after i wake up. that is about the only time of day when i get a couple of hours of freedom from these symptoms. today i got even a weirder symptom, at work i got a bit stressed and all of a sudden, i got a blushing burning sensation that occurs to everyone but this time it only occured on the right side of my face, my right ear was burning red and warm and i blushed more on the right, while on the left side my ear was cool and nomral and i blushed less. right now im waiting for an apointment with another neurologist, it could be weeks before i get one. it yet remains a different issue as what and when i could get more tests done, a CT scan might be done after 6-8months from the doctors order. so my questions are:

1- any idea what could be wrong? ive heard refferences to the third facial nerve and other things but they have only been general public speculations.
2- if it is something more serious, would i benefit of having the ct scans and other exams now or wait half a year for them?
3- any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

regards
EK

  • I have the same thing, but on left side. I've had it for nearly 2 years. After numerous tests I am on an anti seizure medication. It has helped, but not cured it and I still have significant pain. Tomorrow the dr. will up the dosage to the max allowed. I have Lupus, so the pain is just attributed to that. Since MRI showed nothing life-threatening, it is referred to as Lupus induced neuropathy.

  • I'm no doctor but your symptoms sound like mini-strokes. I would advise getting a new doctor and a CT scan and if it gets worse a trip to the ER wouldn't hurt

  • Could also be MS, neurosyphlis, lyme, lupus, fibromyalgia, cronic fatigue, celiac's, vitamin defiency, alcoholism, aspartame toxicity, anxiety...none of which are as scary as they sound....nor an emergency.Often numbness will resolve itself...and many people get unexplained parasthesias (numbness and tingling). Many are really diet or environmentally caused. If you drink diet coke...stop. Aspartame is a very dangerous neurotoxin. Look it up....and don't just look at the front sites funded by the pharmecutical company. Most people want a 'miracle cure'...but there isn't. For ALL of the above diet and exercise will help. Antioxidants, Fish Oil, B Vitamins, Thiamine. I have MS and Lupus the meds made me feel worse than the diseases. I also nearly killed myself with diet coke and a diet for months consisting of only thiamine depleting foods (for a religious fast), my neuro said the symptoms were MS, my rheumatologist said the symptoms were SLE (both which I definitely DO have)....However an astute Nurse Practitioner took me off the diet soda gave me a shot of Thiamine, thiamine supplements and in 3 days I was better....I had Beri-beri, virtually unseen except for alcoholics in the US (which I am not)...the Nurse Practitioner I went to by chance, when I was out of town, worked in a depressed area with a high rate of alcoholism. Things are not always as they seem...but diet and exercise rarely hurt. If you hate excercise (like I do try different forms...like belly dancing, water aerobics..metal detecting...anything that gets you up and moving). Good luck!

Look up cavitations, a good general place I recommend to start is http://www.med-library.net/content/view/135/41/. from there you'll know what to google for more info if you think this may be you. I would also recommend ilads.org or www.lyme.org. hope this helps.k

  • perhaps a pinched nerve c-5 or c-6 could cause numbness and face. muscle at lower end of the scapula on your left side could be soar from activity or because you are getting "more tired" and thus spending more time in your computer chair... the extended periods of irregular spinal curvature could easily cause muscle aches on one side of your spine and cause swelling which then shorts blood flow to the vertabrae causing the numbness in that spinal nerves correesponding area of control- when you sleep at night your spine decompresses and you feel good in the morning ... 4 6 8 hours of slumping will cause the aching.. or your working out could causeyour shoulder muscles to swell. try icing it and keep good posture .. also less sitting at the computer, its bad for your back.

  • Hi, I had the same problem as you. After a little research into this new problem, I decided to change my routine. I removed myself from the computer chair that I sit in for approximatelly 14-16 hours per day. I work, go to school, do my banking all on line so basically i'm glued to this stupid chair. So i got a pillow to sit on and changed the blood flow to my legs and back. Just repositioning myself from time to time helps alot. So if you are like me and have a sedentary lifestyle try this. Elevate your feet to a chair of the same height, increase your fluids (h20) get up from your chair at least every hour for 5-10 minutes. possibly get a different chair or what ever it is you sit in. go for a walk if possible 2 times a day if not some physical avtivity. I believe that your having these symtoms because the blood flow is being restricted to parts of your body and have hard time reaching the upper part of your body face. Or pinched nerve in neck thus causing restricted blood flow, take a half of a niacin or half a glass of wine. Other symtoms include edema in ankles as well as the numbness in neck and face. im 45 yr old female. thanks for sharing.LG
