I have skin numbness problems that started almost 2 years ago. The back of my neck went numb and was accompanied with sharp pain, burning and went away after 6 months. I know have numbness to my right hand which hurts, burns, shoot sharp pain and stiffness. My left knee is numb and burns really bad. Both of my heels are numb and recently my lower part of my right leg under the knee went numb all the way to the top part of my foot. This burns really bad and keeps me awake all night long. I've had several EMG tests - normal. MRI - brain, spine, neck - normal. Negative for lupus. What can it be? I'm on heavy narcotics, perocet, valium, 2800 mg neurontin/day, antidepressent for migraines, blood pressure meds and diuretic.

Please help. Does anyone know what could cause all of these onsets of nerve problems and how to fix it? It has taken over my life. My neurologist doesn't have a clue on what's going on. MS has been ruled out as well. Anyone....please HELP.

  • No, I didn't have any type of neck injury. All of the syptoms just appeared with no cause. I just don't understand what could be going wrong. I agree, I hate the meds, but they help with the pain.

  • It sounds like you have CTS. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I had it and all the same syptoms. Soon as I had the Carpal tunnel release surgery I felt 100% better. I had the pain in my neck, shoulder, elbow and wrist. They may claim it is tendonitis but have them test you for CTS.

  • It might be worth your while going to see an osteopath. They are experts with the spine and things that can go wrong if it is faulty in anyway. Your problems sound as though they are connected to the nervous system what with the numbness and burning. Ring around and describe your symptoms to first find one you feel could be helpful; like with all professions the odd one here and there doesn't know much about their field :-( and can put you off for life. Stay away from a chiro, if you have something wrong with your spine manipulation could make it worse. Though osteos do manipulation they do so after a good examination and after massage, and not at all if they feel it could traumatise.Agape, searchingsam

  • I agree with searchingsam it does sound like your nervous system..definately a nerve out of whack. It sounds like you need more testing. The nerves in your neck could be pinched. This was causing a muscle to spasm in my back and also for me to get tendonitis in my elbow. I did go to a chiropractor but he always massaged first before manipulating my neck then he put ice and heat on it. It took 6 weeks and 3 visits per week but i'm good to go now. Hope you are painfree soon.

  • Hello Katie,Hang in there! When I read your post, most of it could have been written by me. I have had chronic back and neck problems for about 10 years including a bulging disc in my cervical spine (C5-C6) which has come back to haunt me. I first presented to my GP with neck and lower back pain with numbness in my hands and feet in Sept. Sent me for x-rays which showed DDD in lower back and vascular calcifications in my pelvis. Cervical spine x-ray showed nothing remarkable. My symptoms of numbness have become worse and more frequent - I have some type of numbness and pain every day now for 2+ months. Some days it is almost unbearable to try to work (I do typing) or do everyday tasks such as holding the hair dryer to dry my hair. I have had numbness/burning in my feet and numbness in my face around mouth and chin area which feels like novacaine is wearing off at the dentist. Now my numbness feels like very sharp pins and needles. Still having back pain; had a brain MRI - ruled out MS and other neuro problems; had an EMG which showed lower temp in hands, but nothing else; cervical spine MRI showed mild spinal stenosis and bulging disc at C5-C6 and a small annular tear. This explains some arm numbness, but not feet or face. I have seen a neuro whom I did not like - he told me it could be stress and/or depression - arrrgggghhhh! I have an appt. with a an orthopedist this Wed. (who does pain management/epidural injections) and a 2nd opinion neuro consult on 12/26; also had some eye pain/numbness for which I saw my eye dr.; I have moderate asymmetric cupping of the eyes and am scheduled for a HRT visual field test on 12/29. I just want some answers soon. It is painful and frustrating, but just know that you are not alone! :) I am also welcome to any other thoughts and ideas on whom to turn to next. My GP is out of the question. He still believes it may be stress/anxiety/depression to which I told him that is not the problem. Yes, I have stress b/c of my problems, but it is not the cause.

  • Hello my name is Amber. Last year I had a burning (fire) feeling in my hand and it spread up the length of my arm. Was also accompanied on occasion with COMPLETE numbness in my fingers. The pain was truly uncontrollable...even with the prescribed Pain Killers. I had to see several speciallists before they diagnosed me with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. All the info you will find here may help you determine if it is something you need to discuss with your physician.http://rsds.org/index2.htmlHope that whatever the problem is that it will be managable. There is nothing worse than pain.

  • Hello Amber and thank you very much for your reply. :) I appreciate the info. I have not actually had any swelling or rise in temp, just a burning/fiery feeling in my hands and feet as well as the facial numbness. However, I will bring this up with my doctor(s) and see if they feel this is a possibility. I hope you are finding relief. If I get any answers, I will send another post. Hopefully we can help others with similar problems. It's always nice to know you're not alone in your symptoms and that you're not just stressed.

  • Acupuncture might help. A number of years ago one of my arms became weak and numb. I also had strange burning sensations, that would alternate with a feeling as if my bones were made of lead and my arm felt really cold at the core. I sought out an acupunturist on a friend's advice and it was amazing. After a month of my arm feeling like this, within minutes of having the needles inserted my arm felt so much better. It felt like a dam breaking, this warm feeling rushing through my arm down to my hand. Never had a problem again. Never figured it out what caused it.

  • Thanks for the reply. I have consulted with a doctor at a local pain management facility and am scheduled for epidural injection in 2 weeks. We'll see how that goes. The first one is in my lower back, and I am also going to schedule one for my neck, but first want to see how the low back one goes. Anyone have any experience with these? Did it provide any relief? I know there are no guarantees, but I am willing to try just about anything! Thanks in advance.

  • You might want to see an acupuncturist or a homeopath. It's amazing what these two alternative treatments can do. I've had tremendous benefit from them.
