Not the usual sore throat for me

So about two weeks ago I got a tingle in the back of my throat. My first instinct was to just take some vitamin c, increase rest and stop going to the gym. So I did this and after about 4 days. It seemed to be gone. So I went to the gym and did my thing. The next day my throat had a very intense pain. Following this was insomnia, headaches and sinus congestion. About a week later the headaches and insomnia have gone, well still a few headaches in the morning. Also the sinus congestion isn't as bad but still not better. However my throat pain is still quite intense.

At first I figured it was just cold. Because it isn't uncommon for me to get them as a teacher with gruby students always touching me. But, when I have a cold the sore throat always goes away after 2-3 days. But this sore throat has lasted 2 weeks.

I went to an ear throat and nose doctor in my area about a week ago. He just said it is nothing serious and took my money. However with the sore throat pain still as intense as it was a week ago I am starting to think this isn't the case.

Any ideas on what this could be?
