I have had months of kidney problems and pain, fatigue, weakness, muscle aches and weight loss and weight gain. I recently found a lump in my neck and the doctor sent me for a pth-rp blood test. Can anyone explain what this test could determine?

  • This test is used to measure levels of the Parathyroid hormone-related peptide. If your doctor is concerned that the nodule may be associated with the symptoms, the test can sometimes be confirmatory, but I would also caution that if your lab tests indicated hypercalcemia, then it could be from a number of causes and not merely the parathyroid gland. I'd await the results. You'll be okay. Best regards, J Cottle, MD

  • I received most la results back and all was normal except my parathyroid. The dr. said they are waiting for one more result. What is parathyroid? What causes this?

  • The parathyroid glands are 4 small structures embedded in the thyroid gland. They regulate the body's calcium level.

  • I keep developing new symptoms. I am having leg cramps, an increased pulse, forgetfulness and oddly enough hiccups daily. (not something I typically get) Someone mentioned hypercalcemia before. Do any of my symptoms match this diagnosis? I am struggling with finding a diagnosis and really frustrated with the whole process. If you know anything about my symptoms, please help!!!!!

  • No,the only symptom you're having that goes with hypercalcemia is ''confusion,''which I switched from ''forgetfulness.''

  • I just did some reading on hyperparathyroidism, and it said that a PTH level, not a PTH-RP should be done,so now I'm questioning your doctor.

  • I have severe pain around my right kidney. All my urine tests have shown no infection but blood in the urine. I have had weight loss and gain. I lost 9 lbs. in atwo week period and then gained 16 lbs. over the next 6 days! Then I lost 17 lbs over the next 9 days. The doctor said it was fluid because my abdomen was extremely distended. And the doctor checked the pth- related peptide.

  • My fatigue is getting worse.I am not able to do much of anything because I am so tired all the time. I slept til 10:30 this morning, struggled to get up and go pick up my child from a friend's. When I got home it was 11:30, I went back to sleep at 12:30 after I forced myself to eat something. I slept til 3:30 and have not had the energy to do anything short of taking a quick shower. I see the kidney dr tomorrow.Any suggestions for questions I should ask?

  • I went to the kidney dr. this morning. He told me that my urine was full of blood. He said go get your gall bladder taken out and if you have blood in your urine again in 4 months we will look at your kidneys. I told him that I have already had scan of gall bladder and dye test on gall bladder and it was normal. He ignored me and said i'll see you in 4 months. I told him he would not see me again and I left. I go back to my dr. this afternoon to find out about my pth-rp test. Does the gall bladder cause blood in the urine? I haven't read anything that says that but thought I would ask.

  • The gallbladder does not cause blood in the urine.I don't understand why you can't get an answer to why there's blood in your kidneys.

  • I didn't think that it did, but thanks for the confirmation. I am really frustrated and ready to scream. Something has got to be causing this problem and it blows my ind that no one can give me an answer. If I keep letting this go I'm scared I may end up with even more problems. Hopefully my doctor will have some news for me this afternoon.

  • I went to a urologist. I ended up in the er this morning. I was vomiting and had blood in my stool. The dr said I had chronic cholecystits but I'm not sure if I believe that because they couldn't find anything wrong with my gall bladder. He also said that the kidney issue and bloody urine are a different issue. He said I also need a biopsy of the lump in my neck. Is it normal not to see anything unusual with the gall bladder and still have this condition?

  • Chronic cholecystitis is a diagnosis of exclusion and is quite difficult to make.Do you have gallstones?I presume not since you said they couldn't find anything wrong with your gallbladder.that means he's saying you have acalculous cholecystitis(gallbladder inflammation without gallstones, which is pretty uncommon).I wish I could be more help, but it's hard doing this in cyberspace.Next, where did the blood in your GI tract come from?
