My name is Sara and I am 24 years old. For the past 9 months I have had pain under the lower part of my left ribs. In this time since I started to get the pain I have had an ultrasound, MRI, colonoscopy, 2 xrays, and a catscan. All of these came back normal except for the first xray. I was told that there was fluid in my left lung. I had another xray done 5 weeks later and it showed that is was becoming more soild and geting bigger. That was when I had my catscan done. The catscan came back normal. My doctor then put me on prilosec. I was on that for 2 1/2 weeks and it only got worse. It made my stomach bloat and I was full of gas. I could not tolorate it any more. I went to the doctors this past Tuesday and I talked to my doctor about it. I no longer take the prilosec and he told me that the next step was steroid shots and then a bone scan. I don't think that it is my bones. Please can someone help me figure out what I can do, or what else this could be? I got the steroid shots in my lower rib cage and so far it hasen't done much for me. Could this be my gallbladder or other stomach problems? I have all left side pain throughout my rib cage and now I can feel it in my back! Its driving me nuts!! HELP ME!!

  • Hi Sara,With what you have described your left long looks to be of concern. If it originally showed fluid build up and then later signs of being solid and enlarging this can not be ignored. A catscan is pretty much useless for most things in my opinion. Another MRI on the lung should be done staight away. If you have growth on your lung that is increasing in size it will be putting pressure on your ribs and your spinal cord and causing more pain and complications.Until you find out exactly what is going on with your lung don't worry about the other aches and pains as the lung sounds serious. I agree, this doesn't sound like a bone thing even if the ribs are aching, again pain probably enduced by the lung problem. If your GP is unreasonable over a MRI request go to another GP or go to ER and refuse to leave till they do an MRI and don't put on any brave faces, you are in pain and let them know it.All the best.Agape, searchingsam

  • CTluvsjoeXOXOI am not sure about that...Do you watch what you eat??? It very well could be your diet. Or even exercise...Do you have allergies? Or you can always go to the Chiroprator , just to see what they have to say. My Problem became worse since I stopped working out. I also have put myself on a bland diet and taking zantac. And that has stopped most of it. But I still have the dull ache/pressure that I started with. I go for my bone scan soon and after that I am hoping for more test. I know I will not give up until I find the problem. I hope all goes well with you.

  • I HAVE HAD LEFT SIDE PAIN JUST BELOW MY RIBS & SOMETIMES FEELS LIKE SOME ORGAN IS ABOUT TO BURST THROUGH MY RIBS FOR ABOUT 7 YEARS NOW, IT'S ONLY GOTTEN WORSE! IT STARTED NOT LONG AFTER MY YOUNGEST SON WAS BORN (VIA C-SECTION). IT STARTED OUT AS A DULL ACHE; KIND OF LIKE I HAD BEEN RUNNING & ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU PUT YOUR HAND ON IT UNTIL IT EASED UP. THEN OVER THE YEARS IT HAS JUST GOTTEN MORE PAINFUL!! IT SOMETIMES CAUSES SHOULDER PAIN, GAS, ALOT OF BLOATING; WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF SHARP PAIN- I CAN BLOAT ABOUT 4 INCHES. SOMETIMES IT'S A CONSTANT PAIN THAT MAKES YOU JUST WANT TO WEAR SWEAT PANTS OR IT CAN COME FULL ON MAKING YOU CRY.SOMETIMES, I CAN TAKE 2-3 BITES OF FOOD & I'M DONE. I HAVE BEEN ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL (ONLY BECAUSE I WAS AGAIN PREG.-MISCARRIED LATER ON) THE ONLY THING THEY DISCOVERED WAS AN ALLERGY TO MORPHINE!! I HAVE BEEN TOLD "IT MUST BE INTERNAL", BUT HAVE BEEN DISMISSED BY MY GYN BECAUSE HE CLAIMS "IT CAN'T BE A WOMAN ORGAN CAUSING IT" EVEN THOUGH SOMETIMES IT HURTS TO HAVE SEXUAL INTERCOURSE!! I HAVE HAD STEROID SHOTS INTO THE ABDOMEN, MRI, CT-SCAN, COLONOSCOPY, LAPROSCOPIC SURGERY- YOU NAME IT!!I WAS TOLD I HAVE LOW BLOOD PLATELETS DURING THE TESTING & WHAT NOT, AS WELL AS THE FACT THAT MY SPLEEN WAS ENLARGED & MY LIVER WASN'T FILTERING FAT!! THEY HAVEN'T STARTED ANY TREATMENT FOR ANY OF THAT NOR LINKED THEM TO THE HORRIBLE PAIN THAT I FEEL THEY ARE ASSUMING I'M MAKING UP!!MY HEART DROPPED DURING THIS ASK.COM SEARCH & FOUND OTHERS STATING THE SAME DILEMA, FINALLY-I FOUND SOMETHING EVEN IF IT ISN'T A DIAGNOSIS. THANKS, JENNIFERjeffryk@netzero.net

  • I have the same problem with my ribs on left side....It started about two years ago and at first it was only as discomfort under my ribs, especially if I was sitting in the car for a longer journey, or things like that. Then I started having that feeling that something was pushing my ribs from underneath and that feeling is really horrible, because it feels like my ribs will come out through the skin. In begining this pain was sort of on and off,...it would come and go, but for last couple of months it got worse and now I can feel my ribs aching all the time and there is a swelling on that side as well.I have seen my GP few times and finally yesterday I had my X-Ray done so I was hoping that I would get some results, but after reading all these other peoples letters I really doubt that these X-Rays will solve anything....I see now that am not crazy because other people have the same problem, but what is it and what is the cause for this pain?

  • Yes yes yes! If anyone can figure this out - please let us all know. My MD doesn't seemed concerned as my ribs don't hurt when he compresses the rib cage. But why does it feel like something is getting "squished"? I had a laparoscopy hysterectomy recently and there was nothing unusual when they looked around. Hmmm - like the last post said - at least we aren't crazy cuz we now know we aren't the only ones.

  • Hi Sara! I have had my left rib pain on and off for 2 years now. I have had a catscan, ultrasounds, x-rays, colonoscopy, upper gi, and have been diagnosed with acid reflux. The doctor that diagnosed me with acid reflux says that this pain has nothing to do with the stomach. He is sending me to an orthopedic specialist to see if i have torn cartliage between the ribs. He thinks that this may be the problem. I was also, told by a nurse that it could be torn muscle. so, i am going to have thoses checked out next. • I too have had the left side pain and pressure --- for over a year. A very bad cramping, crippling pain at times. I've had all the tests - sonogram, x-rays, 2 ct's and a colonoscopy. The first Dr. originally thought it was kidney stones and eventually sent me to a urologist who discovered it wasn't kidney stones, but "diverticulitis" --- through the first catscan. I've been through - four - two week series of antibiotics and although it helped, it didn't cure the problem. The next catscan from the gastroenterologist showed the same problem and the colonoscopy confirmed it even more. That of an irritated section of the colon, intestine, that just won't heal properly. I was referred to a surgeon to have that section removed, then rejioned, and am now waiting to see him. I have found one other person with the same symptoms that had the surgery done successfully. Her pain and discomfort disappeared.

  • Find a drawing of the abdomen. Note that the large bowel, after it crosses the upper abdomen from right to left, goes higher (on the left) to a flexure (bend) called the splenic flexure (near the spleen), then plunges straight down the left side on its path toward the rectum. Maybe gas gets trapped up there and stalls (gas hurts). Lay on your left side for 15 minutes and see if you can move things along.

Being hyper can probably do that. The nose bleeds shouldn't be anything to worry about. I had the same problems when I was 16 years old I had very very bad anxiety. Your heart feels like it's pushing out of your ribs, because it's beating so rapidly. It's because you're adrenaline kicked in, and your body is reacting to it. Anxiety will never kill you, so that is the first step in telling yourself you are alright. Make sure you take deep breathes, inhale through your nostrils and out your mouth. Do this about 3/4 times. Try to excersize daily, go for a jog, ride a tredmill. Go for a walk. Lay down and listen to soft music. Even doing so for 30 minutes can be a big help. The pains in your heart are actually not your heart at all, I told myself the same thing. I even thought I was having a heart attack once. These are anxiety pains. I had pains shooting down my sides. In my chest. In my stomach. You must realize that you are perfectly fine, the docter would know if something serious was wrong with you. Another thing I found helpful was to make a little journal, and write down all the things bothering you. Even if it was little silly things such as a fight you had gotten with, if you are having problems in school, or at work, if you forgot to do something and it's bugging you. anything at all, just simply write it down and read over it. I'm really glad there are sites like this because when I was going through all my anxiety attacks I had no one to tell me I was alright. UNTIL i checked myself into the ER. Anyhow... if you would like to read about panic disorder, agoraphobia you should get From Panic To Power. You'll beable to realize that many people in the world suffer from Anxiety. Just because you haven't gone through the same scenarios as that person, or had the same thoughts doesn't mean you are really dying like you tell yourself. The mind is a powerful tool. I've learned that over the last 5 years. I hope you feel better. Take care!!-Felicia

  • I too have L sided pain near my ribs. I have been dealing with this for a year+. I have had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. The endoscopy revealed duodeonitis from reflux. I was put on Prilosec which helped but it took almost a month to feel better. The pain is a dull, gnawing pain and when at it's worst causes pretty bad mid back pain. The back pain is just a referral pain so nothing helps relieve it. I have found that I NEED to stay on Prilosec consistanly to avoid reoccurances of the "reflux." Has anyone had any luck with other med, non-traditional medicine, or Probiotics??

  • I had very good luck with non-traditional medicine. I was very ill with over 70 symptoms. I found BioSET therapy which is a form of chiropractic accupressure. I did not have a back problem but suffered many symptoms. I had been on Zantac/Prilosec for the past 21 years for acid reflux. I no longer take it, suffer no pain/heartburn, and have no reflux. I am now medication free. I am now symptom free. If you let me know which part of the country you live, I will help you find a practicioner in your area. I will be a practicioner myself in 2008. I have been a nurse for 15 years and am looking forward to a carreer change and working in an "alternative" field of medicine. One that gave me back my life. Best, mommy cat:) :)

  • I just got this sharp pain 4 days ago. Its so annoying because when I breathe in deeply, it feels like someone is stabbing me right under my ribs only on my left side. The day it started and the next day, there were a couple times when I thought "ok, I should go to the hospital" because it was so bad, but then I found a more comfortable position and it lessened. It never really goes away, but I've been able to sleep alright once I found a position that didn't hurt. It just so happens that I have been eating a gluten free diet for the past couple months. I have been eating things with small amounts like soy sauce and ketchup, etc, and seems like I have more energy--I've noticed a small but pleasant change. When this pain started, I had just eaten a sub sandwich (I ate birthday cake which made me throw the diet out for just one day and thought--just go with it, so I did) Not more than 10 minutes later, this pain began, and it hasn't gone away yet. I quit eating gluten the next day (so it's been 3 days without), but think it takes a while for it to really get out of your body. Anyways, I did end up going to the dr over this pain. I went 2 days after it started because it was really that bad. They did xrays and blood tests which were normal. The dr did suggest a celiac disease test based on the fact that she asked about bowel habits or some happy thing like that and I said, the only weird thing is that it looks like theres a layer of oil on top of the water after I poop. Anyways, since shes brilliant, she said that she would test for celiac (I didn't know there was a test for it). I just got the results--positive. So.....when I started looking this left side pain up, I was VERY discouraged because I thought, great! this is going to last forever and there's no cure--no one even knows what it is!!! I did some research and it looks like celiac disease is way more common than people think....like 1 in 250 people. Anyways, since the pain is still here, I don't know if its been solved for me, but I am at least hopeful now (just because the pain appeared right after I ate a big wad of gluten and hadn't for months previous and the results of the celiac disease test). Hope this helps someone!!!
