My mother has been having burning sensation on both arms and stomach jitters for several weeks. This started when she was sick with a severe head and chest cold. After cold cleared, she continued to have symptoms. Her FD said it was anxiety. However, I do not believe that is the case. Took her to ER last week as these symptoms were accompanied with a very tight chest. ER treated her as a possible heart attack. Gave her stress test-she aced it. Continued to have the burning in arms and stomach jitters, occasional night sweats and numbing of bottom lip. FD prescribed adavan 5mg-insists its anxiety. This does not take away symptoms. She has lost 14lbs in the last 3 weeks. She has been on thyroid medicine for 3 years--50mg. I told her for them to have her take another thyroid test. She is doing that tomorrow. If that comes back negative, she will have a stomach xray. Any ideas??? I am worrying about cancer, of course. She is in great shape--works out 4 days a week for several hours. At 72, she appears to have energy of 50 year old. However, she is quite scared now and so am I. Thank you for any assistance. Noone has ever heard of these symptoms.

I cannot believe they did not check her levels at the thyroid levels at the ER

  • She could also benefit from a supplement of vitamins. I especially think of thiamine (B1) which has a higher requirements in* fever* hyperthyroidism* increased physical exerciseThiamine deficiency leads to peripheral neuropathy so it's not a bad idea to give her extra b-vitamins (and maybe also c-vitamins) now when she is recovering.

Thank you for the suggestions. It seems that my mother's thyroid level is fine. Her blood results came back fine, except her platelets continue to drop. She is at 64,000. She is thalasemic, anemic. I had her stop her iron and folic acid 4 weeks ago. She started them again 4 days ago. Hopefully this will bring her platelet count back up. She was nausous and short of breath. That too seems much better. Not sure if she lost anymore weight. Afraid to check. She has an appointment with an oncologist for her platelets later in the week. She still has slight burning in the arms but not the anxious feeling in stomach. She said her stomach does rumble. Could it be a peptic ulcer? She does not have pain. She is schedule for a stomach scan. Overall, she is much stronger, but I am worried about the burning of the arms. What is wrong...........
