About three weeks ago my husband told me that every now and then and sometimes all day he can smell something like vinegar. It comes and goes and it doesn't seem to have any causes that we can find or think of. It may be while he is home or working, he spends a lot of time in his CR-V, sometimes 12 or 14 hours at a time. I have spent hours in it with him at times and I don't smell anything. I can't smell anything about him that smells bad or like vinegar. We made an appointment with his doctor but he is stumped too. We asked for a blood test since this is making us very nervous and the doctor agreed. It all came back normal. He is now going to have some tests, x-ray and CT scan, I think, sometime next week. Do you have any thoughts on this?

  • He had every test the doctors could think of. We even went to a smell clinic in Ct. last spring. The only reason they could come up with was a virus. Which just happened to be the same thing our G.P. said at his first appointment. It's been about a year and a half and his smell has mostly come back. A few scents aren't very strong but the smell of "vinegar" which he complained about has been gone for a while now. I think it lasted less than six months. We found out that there are many reasons for a smell disorder. As far as we know it shouldn't come back. Knock on wood.

  • What is the "CR-V"? A car? Van? R-V? First, I'd like to say I found the page with all of the possibilities for him. Check it out. You might get a message, saying to end scripts, I said no.http://books.google.com/books?id=HVYyRsuUEc0C&pg=PA422&lpg=PA422&dq=patient+smells+vinegar&source=web&ots=AHmndukkN7&sig=fF0z9NAU6N9fTs6DJulShKVoBpQ&hl=en#PPA421,M1 Now, according to the research, and read through 3 pages of the material, but blow it up larger so you can see it. There could be a constant poison in the CR-V that is doing this to him. They mention poisoning and what came to mind is ethyl mercaptan from pilot lights. I wonder if he keeps them running and if they are functioning correctly. They also discussed xenobiotics, such as formaldehyde, which he may get in a new RV, also mentioned was hydrogen cyanide. Is he using any of those funny plastic bottles? They are a source of glacial acid and he could be absorbing it.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetic_acidIt is an important chemical reagent and industrial chemical that is used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate mainly used in soft drink bottles; cellulose acetate, mainly for photographic film; and polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, as well as synthetic fibres and fabrics. In households diluted acetic acid is often used in descaling agents. In the food industry acetic acid is used under the food additive code E260 as an acidity regulator. It also looks that besides the poisons that he needs to be tested for, that you should include heavy metal poisoning. In the medical pages, it mentioned the following:Addison DiseasePhenylketonuriahyper-methiocinemic (?-sp)Methoxycinnamic???HypothyroidismKallmann Syndromeand EpilepsyTumors Looks like I gave you a few things to explore with your doctors. Go for it and search his environment, especially the R-V, too. If he is feeling better, then it could have been a passing virus.

  • The CR-V is a Honda. For the last year or so he has spent much less time driving or being in the vehicle. We'll look at the information you sent, thank you very much. Yes, he has a plastic bottle that he drinks out of sometimes. My money is on the CR-V being the cause but we couldn't get anyone to agree. There was a TV show on recently talking about a connection between Parkinson's disease and smell disorders too. We haven't spoken to his doctor about this yet.
