My doctor won't return my calls, can someone help ease my mind?

A couple of weeks ago I traveled to Hawaii, shortly after we got there my left calf felt REALLY sore and there was a lump inside. When we returned home the pain was still there so I called the doctor for an appointment. Worried that it was a blood clot, she advised me to go to the emergency room right away.

An ultrasound in the ER determined that the lump was not a blood clot but the ER doctors wanted me to go back to my doctor for another ultrasound to be sure.

At the second ultra sound the tech said she could see what she described as 'some sort of mass' but she didn't know what it is. She went to speak with her boss and came out to tell me that they would forward the information on to my doctor and she would probably schedule an MRI to check out the lump.

That was on Friday, my doctor has not called me since. My leg is still in pain, it's more of a dull achy pain, not a horrible throbbing pain. The lump is still there, it is hard and oblong (not round) and feels like it is connected to something like a muscle. I've called the doctor office several times but they only tell me they are waiting on the ultrasound photos to be sent up.

Any ideas about what this is?

Oblong lump connected to something
About 1 1/2" long
dull achy pain
I'm a healthy 34 year old woman. 5'2" 115pounds.

Thank you for your help!

  • Call the ultrasound techs, ask to speak to the supervisor and tell him or her that you've been worried, you might even be thinking the worst, (I've done that before) and to please send the results to your drs. office. Sometimes these facilities arent always as organized as they'd have you believe, even though thats not always the case.

  • *************UPDATE******************I met with my doctor last Wednesday. She reviewed my ultrasound, felt my leg and said she was going to refer me to a surgeon to have a surgical biopsy to remove and examine the lump. It will be a week tomorrow and I have not had any luck getting my PCP or insurance to tell me the status of my referral. I don't mind waiting for a valid reason, but I've been getting the run around. Now I'm really starting to freak out because in the last couple days I've lost a noticeable ammount of muscle in my calf. Not only tone, but ability to flex my calf muscle. What could be the cause of this lump and muscle loss? Any ideas at all? I'm googling everything I can think of and I think I may just be googling myself crazy :-)I called the patient advocate at my Dr's office this afternoon and 'they are sorry blah blah blah and will get back to me tomorrow'. But until then, does anyone have an idea about what is happening to my leg? Like I said in my first post, I'm a healthy woman. This is really strange.
