Hello. :)

I am the mother of two young children. My daughter is going to turn 2 shortly, and she isn't really talking yet. She babbles a lot, and uses words kind of at random in it all, most of the time. She wont speak on command. Like, If i ask her "say ball" she wont, however, she will use the word at random if she is playing with a ball or something like that. She seems to use words at random most of the time.

the reason I am concerned, is my daughter has always seemed kinda ahead in most things. She has immeasurable problem solving skills, she has been able to escape the doggy door since she was able to walk, she blows bubbles, draws, figured out her bubble bucket before I did (it's spill prof, and you pull the wands out the top to blow them), She can even open child prof bottles, stuff like that. She even said 'mama' early.

However, she isn't talking. She seems to prefer using gestures. If she wants milk, she will go and get her bottle, put it in my hand, and walk to the fridge. She is receptive to what I tell her. "give mommy the bottle" and she will find the bottle and give it to me. "Bath time" and she walks to the bathroom, and starts taking her clothes off.

When she was little, her soft spot was often sunken, and it hasn't fully closed as of yet. However, we went to a specialist, and he said he wasn't that concerned, because she seems to be doing everything normally.

She just /isn't/ talking!

Should I be concerned? What could be the possible reasons? Can someone please help me?

  • I would get her assessed by a speech and language pathologist. They can tell you if it's just speech delay and needs therapy. Also, they can refer you to a developmental professional if further assessment is necessary.Hello. :) I am the mother of two young children.
