I am 41 year old male , 19 years ago I suddenly got an inflammation in the right testis , very painful high fever( 40 C) , testis was swollen . Lasted for a week, then was gone but came back in a month and that pattern kept reoccurring for the next 17 years (every month on average but sometimes up to 3 months between episodes ; the right testis got affected too) had numerous tests and seen many specialist but was not able to get anything approaching diagnosis. Antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, doxyciline) seemed to make the episodes shorter and less severe. I occasionally had also some back pain, double vision and persistent headaches which lasted for days. Don’t know if these symptoms were related but I never had any of them before the problem with the testis.
Around two years ago the situation changed. The episodes become much less severe and less frequent (for 2 years I had 2, the swelling much smaller and not as painful as before). Unfortunately in the last 2 years I developed some new conditions which I did not have before. First around year and a half ago I started getting fevers (37to38C) for no apparent reason which lasted for days and sometimes weeks. This May (2008) one day I woke up with fever and headache my spine felt stiff and painful, I was having tremors in my legs. On the 3 day my right hand paralyzed, I called emergency and was subsequently hospitalized. They put me in the neurology department and I underwent lots of tests, (blood, spinal fluid) they all came negative for whatever they were testing for, only the MRI on the spine showed that it is inflamed for most of its length but again it was not found why (they did a scan on my head as well – my brain was ok) . I was not treated with anything but gradually my hand started to improve and in a week was back to normal.
The hand was the only thing that got better, presently my back is very stiff, it is difficult to walk because I tend to drag my feet as they do not respond fully to my brain. The tremors in the legs continue. I have almost no control of my bladder and I am permanently constipated. I have become completely impotent .None of this was the case before spinal problem.
Sorry for the long post. Does somebody know what (generally) it may be? What kind of medical specialist I should look for? Any other ideas?
