I'm doing research for a book and was wondering what type of cancer is the most aggressive (fastest growing).
Thank you!

  • If you are researching for a book, you would do well to understand that how aggressive a cancer is and how fast it grows are not necessarily the same thing. In general, how aggressive a cancer is depends on how far and how fast it spreads to other parts of the body (i.e. metastasizes). Also, tumors in the brain may not grow very fast or spread but are very dangerous if they affect a vital part of the brain.I think what you want to know is which cancer has the worst prognosis or outcome. This can only be determined by something called the "stage" at which a cancer is diagnosed. If caught early enough, a "bad" cancer may be curable or at least treatable, and if not caught in time, some "not so bad" cancers can be deadly. Generally, some cancers are considered to have a worse prognosis because they are generally caught at a later stage, for example, pancreatic cancer.A third way of answering your question is: which cancers cause the most deaths. In the United States, the most common cause of death due to cancer is lung cancer (excluding skin cancers). In men, the most common causes of cancer death are (1) lung cancer, (2) prostate cancer, and (3) cancer of colon and rectum. In women, the most common causes of cancer death are (1) lung cancer, (2) breast cancer, and (3) cancer of colon and rectum.
