  • My daughter used to do that when she was small. Many nights we slept sitting up because it helped with the cough. After about two years of this, we found out she had cough-variant asthma or over-reactive airways. She was on asthma meds for about eight years, but eventually outgrew it.

  • both "croup" (croup has a very distinctive cough) and also "asthma" cough can be triggered off by the cooler night air and are common in children. I used to have one child who used to get croup cough at night..and the other with asthma cough. The asthma was very tricky to get diagnosed.. she coughed at night, nearly every night for 2-3 years (from about the age of 3 or 4) but during the day was fine. They ended up putting her into the childrens hospital for 5 days.. to try to figure out why I was saying she coughs at night (fortunately i had good doctor who listened to me). They finally discovered asthma and put her on asthma preventative drugs and they completely stopped the cough very soon after. (maybe your doctor will let you trial that with your child to see if it stops the night cough esp if the cough is a long term one). After a few years.. she stopped the asthma preventative (as no coughing at night).. but ended up having a severe major asthma attack out of the blue (turned blue and couldnt breath or speak). I ended up having to rush her to hospital. They called it "silent" asthma.. no warning at all, no wheezing.. just a sudden, out of the blue severe asthma attack where she was completely unable to breathe. She's 20 yrs old now and has stayed on her asthma preventative ever since the asthma attack which could of killed her and has no issues (except needs a puffer at times if exercising). When you say "aweful cough" it makes me think more of croup. .
