Thanks in advance for answering the following question.
I've tried to include everything I know, so please excuse me for the extensive info. Also excuse me since I don't know most of the medical info as well.
I have a little baby of 13 days old. Since the day of her birth (weight 2.53 kg) we noticed that she didn't breastfeed easily. Her mother has a short or small nipple (the mother uses nipple shield sometimes to help). Hence the 1st time she was given formula. After that she only breastfed(interrupted feeding) or was given the feed through a bottle.
After that she stayed at the hospital for around three days with her mother. They were checking the condition, but they concluded that it was only normal for a new born baby, so she was released.
Her mother continued to struggle to breast feed her but the same continued. The baby also slept a lot.On the 7th day she rarely woke and didn't feed, which is why we went to emergency where she was admitted.
She was also very yellow(Jaundice as suspected).
The doctor insisted that he does the LP & several other blood tests.
Later on several conditions were identified:
-Lethargy ( since she was very weak & didn't breastfeed well:interrupted for less than 20 or 15 minutes)-Still no improvement.
-Meningitis (GPs light growth)-They started treating this with Antibiotics but till now no improvement after nearly 7 days.
-Jaundice which has reduced without the light device.
-Hyper calsimia (No reason for this has been identified though they treated it with fluid & then lasex)-It is now lower.
-Certain liver enzymes were unusually high.
-A tiny abnormality of the heart possibly a tiny hole-doctors said it was normal for new born & that it will disappear. Only needs following up.
The doctors don't seem to have a clear idea of what is happening. They've installed a nose pipe to insure feeding 45 ml at every three hours. Nearly 7 specialists of different functions have checked her & still they don't know clearly whats wrong with her. The tests still continue everyday & now we're getting worried. The girl has become weaker. She used to cry loudly when she wets herself but now she only shows discomfort. There's also instances of fluctuations where she'll be awake and ok. On other instances she's very weak.
The doctors are saying that most of these symptoms are of the infection of meningitis. Are they right?
