I'm not really sure how to explain this, or even if this is a psychological problem... I have known this girl for a few years, and she seems to be terribly dramatic at points. I have noticed a reoccuring pattern of dramatics in her life, and doubt the truth to all if not most of them. She is making up tragedy in her life for constant attention... such as multiple friends being severly ill ( cancer, surgeries, uncureable illnesses) multiple deaths in friends and family ( who alot of the friends I think are made up) and aquaintences being in major dramatic settings ( such as the VA shootings) she also has made up abortion issues and surgery issues on herself as well as having traveled recently to different states for "Medical School Interviews". I'm not really sure what that is all about, but have belief that she isn't stable and wondering what exactly makes someone like that, or if it's just a case of wanting attention and a case of pathologic lying.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

  • In my opinion, it sounds like she has some attention issues. Things like this can be sometimes linked to depression and low self esteem. Is her behaviour significant in any other way? Does she fish for compliments a lot, are there other aspects where she seeks attention? Find other signs, this could even be something as critical as self harm. Some people lie like that because they do just want to be centre of attention in particular to have people crowding round and giving them sympathy, it sounds odd, but it can have the affect of making them feel good, getting attention for negative reasons. On the other hand it could be deeper than that. Look out for tell tale signs of abuse, even if it is just abusing herself in a verbal way. Think about her life, in particular anything that might have happened make her feel she has to seek attention in such extreme ways. Hope that helped a little bit.

Whatever trauma she has, it keeps reapeating in her mind so vividly- she keeps re-living it in her "tragic stories".She needs help- confronting her about her "saying lies" is never productive. Since the original event was real- she feels that saying that she is lying is unfair.Pray for your friend. She needs professional help. She has to work on the real issues.Blessings,
