Everyone is stumped.

I'm 46 female heading into menopause - general excellent health.

I've had a low grade fever 99-100 everyday since midsummer. There have been a few days of normal but not many. It never goes above 100. It started one night with a burning, sore throat (like I was about to get the flu) and the next day I felt like crap. I'm generally better now (in that many of the symptoms have lessened) but continue to have the 99-100 daily.

Here are the collection of odd things going on with my body (I'll star the ones that definitely go along with this illness and add the other ones that may be coincidental (or may not be)

*chest/lung tightness + shortness of breath (getting much better)
*dry cough (comes from the top of my lungs - way better)
*no fever relief from Tylenol
*weeks of bed rest didn't help
*periods of moderate to extreme fatigue (getting better)
*tendonitus/elbows has gone from moderate to severe
*feeling of swollen glands (getting better)
*Tremors/quivers in right hand and leg (haven't had in a few weeks)
*pale, tired-looking
*rare bouts of wheezing (only 1 doctor has heard this)
*higher than usual resting pulse
vision rapidly getting worse/blurry and double vision (could be aging)
a few bouts of intense heartburn (could be meds reaction)
jumbled thinking--brain foggier than usual

Some recent events worth noting:
My summer home is in the woods in upstate NY. We were digging a large pond there and it was extremely dusty and irritating before I got sick. I have had raw milk in the last year. I've had ticks in the last year. I've travelled to Japan and Europe in the last year. I usually live in CA. We had pet fancy rats who died this year of respiratory stuff. I'd had dental work prior to sickness (teeth cleaning). I take Wellbutrin, Valtex and Actvella HRT - all but HRT for quite a while. I was routinely treated for Lyme's with Amoxicillan (2 weeks 3x daily) and then later, 2 Z-packs. Antibiotics did nothing. My latest theory is that Diflucan (which I take with antibiotics) may have had a good effect (pure theory). I'm obsessed with fungus theories at the moment.

My sleep/appetite/weight/peeing - all fine.

I have been tested for everything. All of these tests were negative or textbook perfect. Forgive spelling. Endocarditus. (no). Blood cultures (fine). Chest x-ray (perfect). All routine bloodwork (textbook perfect). Lung function test (normal). CRP levels (none). Sed Rate (perfect). Thyroid (great). Mono (neg). Strep (neg). Hystoplasma-fungus (neg). Q fever. Anaplasma. Berliosis. Lyme (twice) neg. TB (neg). Glucose levels (perfect), weird rat disease (neg). 27 exotic diseases. Everything you could possibly think of.

The ONLY measurable, quantifiable symptom is this fever.

I'm seeing a pulminologist, who's stumped. A infectious disease doc. Stumped. I've been to the hospital twice. I'm at one doc or another a number of times each week.

I SEEM to be creeping slowly toward health BUT my fever is with me everyday.

Any clues?

  • In reply to your post, I have had a low grade fever every day, well most days for over a year. I also get night sweats. I've had bloodwork, a hematuria CT scan of the entire abdomen, MRIs, etc etc. and no one can figure out where they are coming from. My temperature always feels off. Last night, we had 25 below zero here in Vermont. No matter what you do in that weather, the cold sneaks in the house and I was clammy and throwing my covers off and on. Normally I would have had my covers on over my head its so cold. Its very uncomfortable living this way, it makes me nervous as well. So you are not alone.I'm working with a pain center right now and the doctor there is doing tests (because I suffer from many neuralgias). Hopefully he will come up with the reason. If not, I think they said they are sending me to an infectious disease guy. I suppose time will tell but I wanted you to know you're not alone.Oh, I had a total hysterectomy in 2005 but that never gave me bad hot flashes. My friends that have hot flashes have taken their temps during one, because I asked them to and none of them have abnormal temps.

  • Have you been tested for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever? This is usually treated with Doxy or Tetracycline which I also thought was used to treat Lyme.
