Loud Heartbeat

For the past three weeks, I've been experiencing a sporadic, loud heartbeat mostly when sitting down, but also when lying down. My heart rate per se is normal, but several times an hour, I will feel a very loud heartbeat, which usually makes me cough, and twice, it has awakened me at night. Here's the irony: about three weeks ago, I decided to cut back on caffeine so I started drinking herbal tea instead of "regular" tea. I stopped the herbal tea two days ago and my symptoms have disappeared. The only "weird" ingredients I could find in the herbal tea are roasted chicory and rose hips. Does any know if either of these ingredients could have caused my symptoms? I've googled both but cannot find anything conclusive. Thanks to anyone who can offer an explanation...

  • Sounds like a premature ventricular contraction to me, although I'm not a doctor. It's the coughing with it that leads me to think this, as well as being awakened by it. The only correlation I see between your caffeine habit and this is that I can see mild issues happening more prevalently or severely directly after stopping the caffeine addiction. In other words, the change in caffeine consumption my slightly alter things, but when your body gets accustomed to the change it should return to 'normal'. It's possible this was present all along and just got worse (many people don't feel PVC's). But, I don't think the tea is causing it (just coincidence) unless you are buying tea from an disreputable source. Have an EKG done. Tell your symptoms to your doc and maybe wear a Holter Monitor to try to pick up the abnormal rhythm.

  • Thanks Harmonium. By coincidence, I found a reference yesterday to PVC on another website (SteadyHealth) and it sounds exactly like what I am experiencing. I will run this by my doctor and see what comes of it. I guess the true test of the issue would be to maintain my normal caffeine intake and try the herbal tea again, and see if the symptoms return. Thanks again!
