For a week now I have had a hoarse voice and I cant figure out why. Some days its completely gone and others its just hoarse. I havent had a cough or really a cold and I havent yelled or used my voice a lot. It makes no sense that I just up and lost my voice... any ideas on how I just lost it, its been a week now?!?

  • Do you eat after 6:00 pm? Do you know if you experience heartburn at night? Or get a 'tickle' in your throat when you go to bed? Do you eat spicy foods,or acidic foods(tomatoes, citrus, etc.) or drink more than a couple of cups of coffee(tea, coke) a day, or eat chocolate at night before bed? If you have answered yes to any of the above, you may be experiencing acid reflux at night when you go to bed. It may not be that noticeable (my husband's isn't, mine is) but it will cause hoarseness and even at times a sore throat for part of the day, due to stomach acid splashing up into your esophagus, and onto your vocal chords. Being overweight will exasperate the problem. If this may be the problem, try adjusting your diet accordingly, milk products will also not help, as they soothe at first, but then cause more acidity as they break down in your stomach. A big culprit is eating between dinner and bedtime. A hard habit to break for me. If you do have acid reflux and adjusting your diet does not help, talk to your doctor about other remedies available. Your esophagus may be too irritated to heal without medication. Hope this helps.
