Hello all,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have a child who has a weird symptom. We've already consulted his doctor, but to no avail.
Son has often had this really bizarre odor to him. It is transient...comes and goes with no particular pattern. It's a very sweet/chemically sweet smell. Not coming from any specific place, we just smell it near his face. My dh and I have noticed that when he smells particularly strong, his behavior is worse.
His urine is always clean for sugars, so it's not diabetes.
My google searches have only indicated diabetes, but no other option. Has anyone ever heard of such a weird thing?

  • I don't know but I would push for blood work to check his glands and I'd like to see his blood checked for diabetes instead of urine. There was one disease, Maple syrup disease, but it doesn't sound like it. Please push for more testing.

  • I am for checking for diabetes again. in fact, i would buy a kit from walmart and some strips and start checking it every time you notice the symptoms. ASAP.

  • Diabetes isn't the only possibility with sweet odor. There is something called maple syrup urine disease. Doesn't sound like a perfect fit, but I'm sure it isn't the only symptom out there like it.

  • Any noticeable behavior problems?Yes. He has been diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome, but his behaviors intensify when he smells like that. In fact, when he's at his worst, the smell is pretty strong. It's such a weird odor....very chemically sweet.I want to thank everyone who replied....I've not pushed the issue with the doctors, since it doesn't seem to be life threatening, but it's starting to bother me.

  • Yes, push the issue. That smell might be ketones spilling into the urine which means fat, and then muscle is being consumed.

  • Well, we solved the mystery. I had to take ds into the docs for an unrelated issue, but he was emitting that sweet smell again, so I brought it up. The doctor looks across the room, flipped through his chart to a year old bloodwork report, told me it was pheromones, and closed the case. Boy. Here I thought it might be a real problem. :mad:In essence, I was blown off. Is it against some ethical rule to get close enough to a person to smell them? Or am I expecting too much? Ugh.

Ugh. is there even a pheromones test normal doctors do?? kind of sounds like bullsh*t to me. Doctors will fake all kinds of things to get one off their backs. I'd be asking to have a copy of the test result which has made him come to that conclusion and insisting to have it! If doctor will not give it to you.. tell him you will access it under the "freedom of info act" (whatever the acts called in your country.. i assume your country gives you a right to access medical records as my own). Whatever you do, i dont think you should allow yourself to keep being ignored with this.. this issue does need to be looked into as it dont sound normal at all and with certain medical issues...there may be other hidden ones linked.. so if you have something, it is important to have a label to put to it.
