Hi, I was discovered to have elevated liver enzymes in 2004. Over the years I've had many many tests including liver biopsy, upper endoscopy, urine/eye tests for Wilson's disease and more bloodwork than I could write here. I do not drink alcohol or take any medications/supplements that would affect the liver. I am in good shape with normal levels of cholesterol/lipids, etc. I sometimes get chest pain, but have had my heart checked out multiple times over. Constipation is sometimes a problem.

Out of all the tests the doctors could think up over the last 5+ years the only abnormalities are as follows:

AST and ALT has ranged from normal all the way up to 2x or 3x normal ranges over the years
abnormal blood coagulation (attributed to very mild case of vonwillebrand's disease)
Liver biopsy results -- LIVER, NEEDLE BIOPSY - MILD NONSPECIFIC CHRONIC PORTAL INFLAMMATION AND MILD FATTY CHANGE.

Recently my enzyme levels have been creeping back up to 2x normal range and I've been getting very dull liver pain/cramping.

I can't get a diagnosis! Any ideas out there?

  • Now I am guessing that tests for Hepatitis, Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, hemochromatosis, and cystic fibrosis were all normal. I am also assuming that you do not have joint pains, diarrhea, or rash on sun expsoure. DO you know if any in your family history have problems with intestine/pancreas or lymphoma? Also mention your age and gender. Hi, I was discovered to have elevated liver enzymes in 2004. • Hepatitis, Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency came back normal. I assume I had the others done as well, I'll have to look through my results. Sometimes I have joint pains and random pains overall. No rash or diarrhea. My grandmother had pancreatic cancer at an old age. I've been told by the doc that my symptoms do not jive with pancreatic problems.I am a 26 year old male.

  • Additionally... Iron stain in liver biopsy and bloodwork came back negative so no hemochromatosis. I'm not sure about cystic fibrosis. I have not had a sweat test. It is possible I was tested if it can be done through the blood.

  • :) Hello,After reading your article concerning your liver problems, I thought that maybe it could be your gall bladder. The reason why I say this is because I have been having soreness, tenderness and pain around my right side on my ribs - below and above and underneath where the liver is located and also the gall bladder. After a doctor examination, he thinks that I may have bone cancer or gall bladder or liver problems. I'm having tests run on me this week and next. I hope this helps you. Thanks,Aprilove

  • Is your GGT elevated? Are you obese or have diabetes?Have they considered autoimmune hepatitis?

  • Bone cancer? Because of liver pain? I'm not an expert, but that seems a little bit out there.Richard, I am 5'11" 162 lbs. not obese and no diabeties. I've been checked for hepatitis. I'm not sure what GGT is, but if you're asking about the functioning of my bile ducts I had an upper endoscopy and the ducts are normal. All the doctors are puzzled as well as I...

  • GGT is an enzyme that is almost always increased in people with liver trouble.I suggest that you find out what yours is.

  • What would an elevated GGT point to? What if it wasn't elevated? I would assume, if GGT is highly related to AST/ALT/Alkaline Phosphatase, it will be also elevated in my case. The three items above are usually elevated. I'll ask to have GGT checked out next time I'm at the docs. I think they're getting tired of me there because each time they just tell me how much of a mystery I am. Are there any other ideas?

  • As I said ,GGT is specific for the liver. If it's not elevated, your problems are not with your liver.
