I get pain in various places on my right leg. The lower right back, the side of the **m cheek, right under the **m cheek, above the knee, the side of the knee and the shin. The pain varies and may not effect all these areas at the same time. The pain tends to be a sharp throbbing pain, kind of like a headache and it will come and go normally with a gradual build up. I also experience alot of stiffness in my legs.

Recently I went to a chinese herbal doctor and he believed the sciatic nerve was the cause and advised me that accupuncture, heat treatment and pressure massage could cure or help it. He advised that I would only need the one visit so I agreed to this and went ahead with the treatment. After the treatment I was told I would need another 7 sessions on a weekly basis to completely cure it so I was reluctant as I was not 100% sure of his diagnosis. For 1 week i was pain free and never had a problem but after that I was back to square one.

Are these the symptoms of siatica? From what I read the sciatic nerve does not effect the shin, aswell as this if I am experiencing pain i can normally ease the pain off when I play football although sometimes it will come back worse afterwards. There have been times when the pain is around the upper thigh/side of the **m and when I'm walking very occasionally i have felt as though my leg was giving way around this area, although it never has, kind of like walking of a kerb without knowing the kerb was there.

These might be seperate issues that i am going to mention now but will do incase they are related.

1. I get lower back pain when driving.
2. just recently i am now getting a sharp pain in the upper spine (only occasionally when im driving) and this will also occasionally give me pain in my upper right arm.

I hope someone can help or at least tell me what they think as I need to find out what options i have or what the best treatment is.

Regards

Reidy

  • I have the same symptoms. I think you might want to read this book "Healing Back Pain", by John Sarno. It is amazing and really makes sense to me. Best of luck to you!

Regards Reidy This does sound like sciatic and I would not give up after having just one acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture does work for this and it is the reason I became a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Had severe sciatic pain 15 years ago and was in severe pain. Nothing helped so I had a friend who suggested acupuncture and I tried it - I had only two treatments and my pain was 100% GONE! Not everyone has such a dramatic effect, but the fact you felt an improvement for one week tells me that it would really help you - but you need to consistantly go for at least 4-6 treatments on a weekly basis to get lasting relief. It sounds like you are exacerbating your problems a bit with driving and doing sports. Driving can put a lot of pressure on the sciatic nerve...especially if you wear your wallet in your back right pocket. If you do - change sides or just put your wallet in your glove compartment. Same is true with your cell phone. I highly recommend acupuncture for this - it doesn't matter what western allopathic diagnosis you have. If you felt relief after treatment then why stop?!? It is extremely effective for this problem! You might also wish to toggle this treatment with deep tissue massage - massage goes very well with acupuncture. Best wishesDOM

  • I agree that one acupuncture session is not enough. You need several treatments. You can actually get worse after the first treatment. But I was wondering. Have they excluded deep vein trombosis? A DVT in your right common iliac vein could result in symptoms like yours. Even if you don't seem to have any swelling. Good luck with everything!

  • Thankyou for your replies. I wonder if you can give me your opinion on the following? Can sciatica start as a result of an injury? My problems started around 4/5 years ago and i remember the day well. I was playing football and whilst sprinting I felt a click in my right upper leg area on the side of the **m cheek. Gradually as the game went on this leg got weaker and weaker and eventually later on that day I had difficulty walking on it and at was given way when weight was put on it. I did not visit the doctor at that time, dont ask why, suppose I was young and didnt think it was serious. Ever since that day I have experienced the problems described.RegardsReidy

  • Reidy,I am ruling out the DVT theory, I misunderstood. I thought that the pain had started recently. Unless you have a 5 years old DVT, which I doubt.I do not know if sciatica can start as a result of an injury. But I think you should definitely give the acupuncture a try. It can do wonders.Good luck!

  • Can sciatica start as a result of an injury? Yes, it certainly can. Or you could have injured your pelvis and later caused the sciatic to flare up. Either way acupuncture is the best treatment for this IME.DOM
