I am constipated and have been for approx 2/3 months, however I am going 2-3 times per week albeit smaller than usual. I have put on 9lbs in last 5 weeks and 2 weeks ago noticed large bulges either side on lower belly. When I lean backwards the mass either splits into 2, one each side and concave below the belly button, or if I lean slightly to one side then the mass seems to turn into one mass poking out the left side. The mass is tense to the touch and can purtrude about 6 inches and I can fit each mass, or the whole, in each open palm. When I stand normally I can disguse the mass but just look lower belly thick and bloated and have been asked if I am pregnant, which was nice!

I have seen my doctor 3 times and 1st couple visits gave me laxitives, for around 4 weeks but that did not improve matters so I taking them. Doctor states that I have a very full colon caused by impactation and this will pass. Can't be good to have months worth of waste rotting interally, however ....
My doctor is not concerned which is worrying as I need a resolution, if not a new wardrobe!

I then had a colonic hydro in search of a solution and even though much waste was removed, the bulge has not reduced. How has this not reduced if my colon was cleansed? How can I have impactation if lots was removed during the colonic yet why do i still have the swellings?

I am passing urine frequently with a full bladder. Could be as I have increased water intake over last 6 weeks to 2 ltrs but still it seems excesive. Maybe a red herring ....

I am female, in my mid 30s, of average height, weight and excercise approx 3 x per week by way of yoga and running. I eat well and take plenty of sol fibre, fruit and veg and drink approx 2 litres water per day. I have been drinking pineapple juice as a natrual stool softner for the last few weeks but alas no change. I have always been regular until recently.

I have Endemetriosis and leisons removed, cysts on each ovary and appendicts removed during one operation last Nov. All was fine for 5 mths but could this be related?

I am getting desperate. I have private medical insurance but my doctor is not forthcoming to refer me as "I am just constipated" but there must be some hope?

Any ideas?

  • Common Causes of abdominal masses are... (sorry, there are some really negative things here) Abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause a pulsating mass around the navel. Bladder distention (urinary bladder over-filled with fluid) can cause a firm mass in the center of the lower abdomen above the pelvic bones, and in extreme cases can extend as far up as the navel.Cholecystitis can cause a very tender mass that is felt below the liver in the right-upper quadrant (occasionally).Colon cancer can cause a mass almost anywhere in the abdomen.Crohn's disease or bowel obstruction can cause multiple tender, sausage-shaped masses anywhere in the abdomen.Diverticulitis can cause a mass that is usually located in the left-lower quadrant.Gallbladder tumor can cause a moderately tender, irregularly shaped right-upper quadrant mass.Hydronephrosis (fluid-filled kidney) can cause a smooth, spongy-feeling mass in one or both sides or toward the back (flank area).Kidney cancer can sometimes cause a mass in the abdomen.Liver cancer can cause a firm, lumpy mass in the right upper quadrant.Liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) can cause a firm, irregular mass below the right rib cage (right costal margin), or on the left side in the stomach area (epigastric).Neuroblastoma, a malignant tumor often found in the lower abdomen, that primarily occurs in children and infants.Ovarian cyst can cause a smooth, rounded, rubbery mass above the pelvis in the lower abdomen.Pancreatic abscess can cause a mass in the upper abdomen in the epigastric area.Pancreatic pseudocyst can cause a lumpy mass in the upper abdomen in the epigastric area.Renal cell carcinoma can cause a smooth, firm, nontender mass near the kidney (usually only affects one kidney).Spleen enlargement (splenomegaly) -- the edge of an enlarged spleen may sometimes be felt in the left-upper quadrant.Stomach cancer can cause a mass in the left-upper abdomen in the stomach area (epigastric) if the cancer is large.Uterine leiomyoma (fibroids) can cause a round, lumpy mass above the pelvis in the lower abdomen (occasionally can be felt if the fibroids are large).Volvulus can cause a mass anywhere in the abdomen. (kids only)Ureteropelvic junction obstruction can cause a mass in the lower abdomen. You'll notice no one mentions colon constipation. Go to a gyn or G.I. doc and give your old doc the heave-ho. Get some xrays. A barium enema for starters.

  • Endometriosis could certainly be the culprit. I think it is important for you to have a CT scan and a colonoscopy to rule out anything else, but if they find nothing (which I suspect they will) find a gyn who *specializes* in endometriosis. Endo has *often* been known to grow on the bowel (as well as some far reaching places like the brain and the lungs, altho these locations are rare), and it will require a bowel surgeon to remove it (the Endo surgeon will have them on call when you enter surgery).

You see your colon is tense and it is causing your back to cramp and that causes pressure on your colon through muscle cramping and this just goes back and forth , but warm water a bath preferred or a ride on a harley . When I was young I had back problems and stomach and when i could I would go out on a ride in the sun or at dusk when I was in pain as this took the pain away by 50 % if not all . but just try a bath at first then try to get some one to work on your back lower just the muscles

For months my mom has been diagnosed wrongly and it almost cost her life. She went in because the swelling got worse and the pain/pressure became unbearable. Finally they did a ct scan and realized her large intestine has a blockage. After being rushed into emergency surgery they found a tumor blockage had caused her Large intestine to shut down and bloat and the dr removed her entire large intestine and the tumor. She was told if her colon had ruptured it would have have easily killed her. Sadly, she saw her family dr the day before and was told it was just constipation and gave her medicine. A month before she was told it was E Coli and given an antibiotic.

I have private medical insurance but my doctor is not forthcoming to refer me as "I am just constipated" but there must be some hope?Any ideas?I have been having the same problem. I am on my 5th, almost 6th, month of this problem. I was constipated for approximately 3 months and finally went to see my GI doctor. The only thing he did was tell me to take myralax for a week. I did that and I have been regular ever since, but the buldge under my belly button is still there! The feeling of being full, bloated and uncomfortable does not go away at any time during the day. Even in the morning when I first wake up I am still swollen and feel like I ate a thanksgiving meal. I am very healthy and I keep myself hydrated. I don't understand what is going on with me. I am supposed to be trying on wedding dresses soon, but I can't if I look 3 months pregnant! I have been reading about ileocecal valve syndrome and I am not sure if that is what I have, but I am going to bring it up to the doctor this week when I go for my follow up. I just want this thing to be back to normal! I want my belly to be normal again and to feel nice and light! I believe there is a chance my doctor is going to tell me that I need to have a colonoscopy done, which if that is the case I am perfectly fine with if they figure out what is wrong and how to fix it. I had also gone for hydrotherapy but there was not much coming out and the lady told me there was a blockage. Anyway, hopefully it helps you to know that you are not alone. Goodluck!
