Knee pain

Hi, I'm 24 years old and for the last couple of years, after I walk a few blocks or go up the stairs my knees look like they have sunburn. They turn red and hot, this causes a slight pain (sometimes bothers me a little)...usually i put some ice on them or lay down for a while and that usually does the trick, but lately this problem is happening more often...
i would like to know why this might be happening

Thanks in advance
