My sister has been down for four days with a fever, chills and awful body ache for which she has been taking pain killers every few hours. Right now with the drugs she is still experiencing major pain in her back. She states that when the drugs wear off every muscle especially all down her backside is in terrible pain, and her head throbs. Since this is the forth day with no sign of improvement I am worried, but in our experience at the hospital the doctors will not test for anything serious; they always diagnose from what you just tell them so we are pretty sure they will say it's the flu and we should wait it out. I am afraid we are dealing with something more serious. I don't know what to do.

  • She should get to the hospital/doctor ASAP. The fever indicates an infection. She could have a kidney infection if the pain is in the lower to mid region of the back. She doesn't have to have pain when urinating for there to be a kidney infection. I got one in my twenties that was completely asymptomatic until I woke up one morning unable to get out of bed with severe back pain, chills, fever etc. The back pain was very intense. The only symptom that then appeared was blood in my urine. Does she have any blood in her urine? Does she have a history of cystitis (urinary tract or "bladder" infections). Is she sexually active, because this can cause cystitis.BTW, I can remember that my heart was throbbing, but this may have been--in my case--related to fear or panic that something was terribly wrong with me.There could be other causes, but this is one that comes to mind and a kidney infection is not something to be messed around with.
