Unfortunately, I don't have health insurance or the money to go see a doctor without it. I know I can't expect the a normal medical evaluation here, but insight would be greatly appreciated.

About a week ago, I started feeling ill. I had some small amount of weakness, a nagging but minor cough, some nasal and chest congestion, but not too bad.

About four days ago, I had a new lump in my underarm. One the surface I have a couple of small spots, pea-sized or smaller. I can feel a bulk of hard something under the skin where they are, perhaps swollen lymph nodes? Usually when I am getting ill, my jawline or neck lymphs swell up but usually have little pain or discomfort. Currently, they are not swollen in those locations.

For the past couple of days, I've occasionally applied a warm compress to the underarm.

This morning the underarm swelling had sort of cracked open, and had some discharge. It was mostly pink from blood. I've seen pus and such described as yellow, green, etc but I didn't really notice much color other than the slight pink from blood. I squeezed the area a bit to drain it and cleaned it. Currently it's not seeping at all, I think it's very slightly crusted over. The size remains the same overall.

I have very little redness in the area, but some. It doesn't seem to be spreading at all, and the swollen area seems to be mostly staying the same size (occasionally it seems a bit smaller but it's hard to tell for sure.)
I don't have a headache or fever. I have some fatigue and weakness right now. By the way, I am a type 2 diabetic. If any other info would help, please ask.

  • By the way, I forgot to mention that I am a 33 year old male. I've never had a swollen lump in my armpit before until a few days ago and it rapidly popped up in those last few days. It's quite sore, moving my arm around irrritates it and occasionally it has a burning sensation beyond normal out of the blue. Tonight I woke up with a major case of the chills, though it was genuinely fairly cool in the house at the time. I am usually very resistant to the cold (and sickness btw, I really hardly ever get sick), but I was chilling up good. I don't think I have a fever, but I need to run and pick up a thermometer to be sure. The discharge didn't smell badly. It essentially smells like my armpit does, which is typical and not really offensive (-slightly offensive because I'm avoiding deodorant right now, to avoid extra complications from an open sore.) The only swollen glands/nodes I've had before is that it's common for me to have them right under my jaw when I am getting sick, and sometimes in the side of my neck. These are not sensitive or minimally so, and never form a boil or anything of that sort. Right now I don't have any of those things.

  • FYI, update: My chills are pretty severe right now,it's difficult to type due to shaking. My body temp after taking a measure was 96.6 once and 97.3 the second time. When I was in my car under high heat, the chills did drop significantly but not end. Now I'm in a room about 74-75 degrees currently and shaking pretty bad. Appetite is pretty good. I got a multivitamin, some flu symptom medicine and will be putting polysporin on my ruptured arm boils or whatever it is they are.

  • Since my last post, my temp has increased to 99.4 degrees. I took advil maybe 3 hours ago, so avoiding taking more for now. Gonna rest. The chills are subsiding but still present.

  • It sounds like an infection...you realy should get some money together (friends/family) and get it diagnosed in order to get antibiotics...I don't know how your system works (being in the UK i get NHS) but can't you get emergency treatment for bad cases and a fever and the chills I think may allow you to but as I said I don't know your system for free medical care (if there is one)

  • I had read you story. What you have is like a bad ingrown hair called a boil. When it pops it looks like the most disgusting thing. I'm not to worry about you having cancer, because if you did it wouldn't pop and the lump for them aren't as soar as boils are. I think your sickness is different then your boil and is just a coincident that you ended up having both of them at the same time. If your sickness isn't gone after seven days then consult a physician.

  • Thanks very much. It's sort of odd, the wound doesn't really look that bad, it was just swelling and a couple of red spots/raised skin. When it broke open, even then it was just like a couple of small cuts or something. It looks nothing like a blister, for example, which is what I expected a boil to look like. Currently I've been just taking advil around the clock and a multivitaminm getting plenty of fluids and rest. My fever has gone away (tho currently my temps are in the 99.2-99.6 ramge). I have a little bit of soreness all over my body and a little bit of head/neck pain, which could be partially attributed to so much sleep. The boil seems to be going down, though the fatty/fleshy part of my underarm just below their location is a bit swollen/stressed, but this is probably typical of the healing process? Overall, I feel MUCH better than I did last night, when I was running a decent fever (up to 102.9) and almost delirious, uncoordinated, etc. for a while. I am hoping there's no relapse, but I think I'm on the road to recovery! The boil thing threw me off, never had something like that before. Is it normal for them to have a notably bulky mass below the skin too?

  • Question: I currently have minimal soreness under the right arm from those spots mentioned, but I have a huge lump under the skin, maybe the size of one third of a softball. It's sore to the touch. Could this be a swollen lymph node?

  • Updates... the boil erupted again, lots of pus. The aforementioned swollen lump has gone down, assumably because of the pus eruption. A little odd, applying pressure to the swollen lump under the skin doesn't seem to cause any more pus to come out (tho pressuring the spot where the boil has erupted does, a little.) Also, the swollen lump area is now clearly visible when the arm is looked at, as the skin is darker and redder for the entire area that is swollen. I had just woken up if that makes any difference. I cleaned up the eruption, applied polysporin.
