Inexplicable and continuous stomach pain

Hello. Our daughter just started her periods in October. She is 12. She now suffers with continous stomach pain. The symptoms are - 15 mins of no discomfort whatsoever. 2 to 3 mins severe pain, then returning to 15 mins no discomfort - and so on. This situation has been the case for 8+ weeks and it affects her 24 hours a day. She is on strong sleeping medication so she can actually sleep. After weeks of doctors and consultants - we have no answers. She does not have any other symptoms, no temperature, bowel movement problems, other illness, she is certainly not 'faking it', not suffering from stress - nothing else. She has had ultrasound scans, internal exams, nothing. We do not know if it is the onset of puberty or periods, hormonal change - we cannot understand this constant and predictable cycle of severe discomfort, then feeling fine. Like throwing a switch. Any help or suggestions appreciated.

  • Hi There...It is certainly troubling that your daughter is suffering so badly that she needs strong sedatives judt to get some sleep.I was wondering if she has been tested for Endometriosis? It can cause severe pain and is often overlooked by doctors.Hope that this may be helpful and best of luck. :)

  • Thanks for the response Tinkerbelle, the symptoms of Endometriosis do not appear to be the same, in that the pain is continuous and does not revolves around periods, bowel movements or anything else. Still at a loss and she is back in Hospital today for more tests. We think it must however relate to hormones as the cycle is so consistent and the pain / relief so 'instant'. If we get a diagnosis and treatment that works I will post it here in case it's useful to other desperate googlers.

  • Has she seen a gastroenterologist? Been checked for Crohn's disease? It can start out with stomach pain as symptom and then develop more symptoms as the disease progresses. I had to see about 5 doctors before one diagnosed me (However, that was about 30 years ago...it usually gets diagnosed more quickly today) My prayers are with you and your daughter.

  • Yes she has been tested for just about everything imaginable and no results. It's now the middle of Feb 2011 and she is still about the same :(

  • Well in case it is any use to anyone else who might read this, the situation remains the same, 16+ months on.She is in Hospital half the week and at home the remainder. No School. At this point the diagnosis (though still not a diagnosis) is that it is a Phychological condition, something similar to Anorexia. You might call it attention seeking. She genuinely believes the pain is there, in the same way a Anorexia sufferer believes she is overweight. But there is no pain.
