A friend asked me to post a problem she sees in her spouse.
He is newly retired and spends most of the day hanging around the house doing absolutely nothing. He has always been like this, but now it seems worse than ever. He retired to travel, but makes up excuses not to.
90% of his life is spent in the bathroom, washing his hands, or dealing with what he claims are stomach cramps and bowel problems. He's been to doctors about the stomach stuff, but nothing like change of diet, has helped.
It's driving my friend up the wall.
She works at home, and hearing him washing his hands all day and being a dead weight is really getting to her. She is strongly suspecting mental illness.
I don't know if this is to ask how she can keep from going nuts, or how to help this guy with his obvious problems.

  • The obsessive handwashing sounds like OCD.

  • Could very well be. He has these odd habits like touching a plate several times before putting food in his mouth. Once his wife was on the floor in stomach cramps, and he had to wash his hands for 5 minutes before driving her to the health clinic! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment!
